There is an amazing 'work - life' balance at Microsoft who value employees as their greatest assets.

Pros

Amazing work - life balance
Fantastic facilities
Supportive work culture
Very skilled co-workers

Cons

Too much focus on numbers

Advice to ManagementAdvice

The number based rating shouldn't be too much emphasized and pushed through, so that talented and skilled people will continue focus on quality and other non-quantifiable values like enthusiasm and calmness

Great company with lots of opportunity to move and grow, but no work/life balance

I worked at Microsoft full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

You get to work on big products used by millions of people, and there are lots of opportunities to learn and grow your skill set because you can move around within the company quite easily. Also provides some of the best benefits you'll ever find from any company. Lots of fun events!

    Cons

Requires an enormous amount of your time to be effective, so there's little real work/life balance. The performance review process is overly political, pits you against your peers (causing some to be less willing to help you or take credit for things they didn't do), and your ability to do well tends to be tied quite closely to your manager's standing in the management team, and your manager's effectiveness in fighting for you in stack rankings.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Discard the old Gates-style stack ranking process, it's time for it to go.

I have been working at Microsoft full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Microsoft is fairly easy work-wise compared to other tech companies in the sector. If you're looking to have a life and get a pretty good paycheck, you should work here. If you want to make huge blazing changes in the industry, don't bother unless you are very senior -- too large of a company to make any real change

    Cons

Due to its size, there's a lot of employee redundancy and bloat. Too much red tape and working with multiple teams to get very simple tasks completed. Your manager will make or break you here - be sure you get a good one.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Align senior exec incentives to things like innovation and creativity, constantly measuring performance with scorecards is a waste of time and doesn't bring us any closer to coming up with new ideas
