It's okay

Scientist (Non-faculty) (Former Employee)
Raleigh, NC (US)

I worked at North Carolina State University full-time for more than 8 years

ProsGreat flexibility and autonomy. If you're a faculty member, it's pretty good. If you're a professional, non-faculty employee, it can also be good. Lots of vacation time. I don't know about regular staff.

ConsSalary is below market. Recognition of doing a good job is non existent. Leadership from department to department is highly variable. Some department/unit heads have no management training or experience. This creates undesirable results

Advice to Senior ManagementRecognize star performers better, find more incentives for employees. Require management training before promoting to dept./unit head.
