Former Employee - Regulatory & Energy Economist in London, England (UK)

I worked at Ofgem

Pros

Great training, decent compensation package for Public Sector, great post-Ofgem career prospects, flexi-time, holidays and amazing pension

Cons

People were really boring! The work can be quite boring too and there is way too much buceaucracy. People get boxed into doing boring tasks and there is little or no feedback loop on how well a task was performed

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give people more autonomy to work as they see fit..

    Pros

Great life-work balance, with the flexitime scheme being an important feature. Good place to start a career in Renewables or price regulation.

    Cons

Heavy beaurocracy; uncertainty about where the organisation is going in light of government change, and subsequent review of the organisation, which is a 'quango' in effect.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to be stringent about your 'open door' policy, and make it a reality not a story you tell to candidates! Review your incentives in light of pay + recruitment freeze.

Current Employee - Senior Manager in London, England (UK)

I have been working at Ofgem full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

If you are looking for work in the public sector it may be a good starting point, especially if you are early in your career. It also helps to be proactive in be seen in doing things and play along with management's tune. Good pension scheme - if you can trust that you will get it back in the future. Good level of communication among colleagues

    Cons

The pay package is generally low. Staff retention is not on management's list of priorities. People with actual industry knoweldge may be perceived as people with unrealistic views. You need to be a political animal with low ambitions for your career to survive. Decsisions are not always based on the merits of the numbers, which can be very frustrating and demotivating for employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No advice - doubt it will be heard as internal feedback has been neglected.

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
    No opinion of CEO
