I worked at Risk Management Solutions full-time (more than an year)

Pros

Opportunity to mix with some very bright, friendly bunch of people and on the whole this is probably one of the most exciting type of modelling work in insurance.
Salaries are decent but without the banking culture so work/life balance is surprisingly good.

Cons

Work not challenging enough and this can be very frustrating, esp when you're expecting to make good use of your advanced degree. This is role-dependent but work needs to be better linked to skills to ensure staff feel challenged.

I have been working at Risk Management Solutions full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Difficult to come up with one. Industry leader? Okay salary? Good work-life balance for some employees!

    Cons

    Where to start?

Confusion among management on what path to take. Extremely bad judgement in promoting employees to management positions. People who'd obviously make worst managers are promoted. You just need to make friends with upper management. And tell them what they like to hear. They care the least about what's good for the company and what's right.

There are some groups in the company that obviously have nothing to do all year. Some teams have to work hard year around.

It's a little better now, but some people spent all their time going to the gym or chatting at the water cooler, while some had to come to work every weekend.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep all the individual contributors. There are some smart hardworking people among them. Get rid of everyone director and up. Bring new management.

I worked at Risk Management Solutions full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

There are quite a few great employees there to work with. Smart and hard working people. And there is a lot of cool technology to work on.

    Cons

For a company that excels at catastrophe modeling, it is sure clueless how to model a great company. Upper management celebrate those that make them look good, aka PhD in BS. Those that want to be truthful about issues that, if resolved, could really do a lot of good are shunned or given a "package". And it doesn't matter if you are a new, a veteran, a quiet, or an in your face employee. The MO for these guys is, if you have a dissenting comment, get the hell out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

What ever happened to "our employees are our greatest asset"? Now it is, "limit regrettable attrition", and 5 seconds later, "what's regrettable about this person leaving?". Fire the upper management and get some people who know what a positive working environment is.
