Former Employee - Assistant Store Manager in Burns, OR (US)
Former Employee - Assistant Store Manager in Burns, OR (US)

I worked at Safeway full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

great advancement opportunities, potential to make 6 figures with a bonus as a manager, excellent benefits if you work for a non union store, union stores do not offer as much and the whole benefit package is different

Cons

very stressful, high demands, very "corporate" and all about policy, no grey, all black or white, they say that they are family oriented but when you are salary as a manager or assistant it seems like you can't be sick and your always on call, you cant even shop in the store on your own time without being asked tons of questions so you pretty much have to shop else where

Advice to ManagementAdvice

watch everything you do and follow policy to the tee! Safeway is big on policy which is a good thing but sometimes things are grey, not always black or white but sometimes policy is set aside which can be a bad thing, not always as consistant when it comes to some policies like WIC violations

Former Employee - Department Manager in Baltimore, MD (US)

I worked at Safeway full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The benefits are good. There's a union, but that only benefits people who receive a lot of disciplinary actions.

    Cons

Managers consistently try to steal hours from departments (but maybe that's learned from corporate). As far as the bakery is concerned, you have to deal with lazy coworkers, a lot of call-outs, and work not completed. Not a team atmosphere. If you are good at your job, you are expected to pick up the slack for someone who isn't.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn how to interview candidates and try to actually hire people who will perform the tasks that you need performed. MANAGE your staff and SOLVE problems or at least try to help solve them.
