I have been working at Sleep Number by Select Comfort full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

I get to help people improve their lives (and sometimes save marriages) by improving the quailty of their sleep! The beds and bedding are of the highest quality. The innovations and technology are unmatched.

    Cons

The sales and POS training needs to be much more comprehensive. The POS system is outdated and clunky, leaves room for data entry error. A more visual and user friendly system would be much appreciated! I also wish the products were a bit more competively priced... that is the BIGGEST complaint from our customers. The paper trail the company requires is far too much.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer AT LEAST 1 month's worth of better quality sales and POS training before a new employee is allowed to set foot on the sales floor. Provide iPads for sales reps to be able to give quotes while the customer is laying down on the bed (emotional connection) The POS system needs to be able to save and edit quotes. The Sales Portal is far too massive for a newbie like me to absorb all the info the company requires. I have some great ideas to be able to speed up the sales process, and I would love to talk to anyone in development about them. Otherwise, it's a good company to work for!

Good earning potential if you can overcome the obstacles to being successful

I worked at Sleep Number by Select Comfort full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Unlike many other retail jobs, there is the opportunity to make a decent living at the company if you become proficient at the tricks of the trade. The company does make high quality products which many, and arguably most, of their customers love.

    Cons

The sales process is too scripted. The company demands that you use their branded terminology when discussing the attributes of the beds and bedding items, frequently making interaction with customers awkward.

At some stores, incomplete information is provided regarding warranties and return policies, which results in upset customers who vent their fustrations online. That, in turn, makes it difficult to sell the beds to potential buyers who like to see what others have to say about a product before they purchase.

In an economy that is still struggling, Select Comfort also always seems to be looking for ways to increase prices. That obviously makes it more difficult to sell the products, which are already expensive to begin with.

The company also assumes in its training materials and videos that everyone who comes into look at their beds suffers from back pain or shoulder pain, or constantly tosses and turns at night. The reality is that many customers are just out to replace an old bed and are considering the Sleep Number beds because of good things they have heard about the beds. Too little focus is provided on how a salesperson can convince these individuals to buy a Sleep Number bed versus innerspring mattresses that sell for considerably less.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Select Comfort needs to do a better job of taking care of their owners. They should have someone in each market who can respond to customer issues such as bad air compressors, leaking air hoses, or broken remotes as opposed to having the customer figure out what the problems are and request replacement parts which they then have to install. The bad reviews online are hurting the company's business and will continue to do so unless addressed.
