Former Employee - Software Engineer Intern in Mountain View, CA (US)

I worked at Symantec full-time (less than a year)

Pros

Ethics driven Company
As an intern, I didn't find any politics, everybody was nice and helpful
Good pay and nice cafe

Cons

Not everybody is smart (some people are just going along because they have been at the company long)
Older workforce in general makes it less attractive for new interns and new hires

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more young people, and make changes fast (older workforce although good, is still resistant to change...just my impression though)

    I worked at Symantec full-time

    Pros

This place keeps you on your toes, which can be good or bad. It was definitely good in the sense that the work/people will encourage you to become more efficient. The 360 feedback is useful for improving job performance. The salary is pretty good compared to most places.

    Cons

New management and continuous micro-management caused what I think is probably one of the worst employee turnover rates that exists anywhere. Management is totally out of touch with reality, over-estimates on work, which leaves a heavy burden for the team. Despite many attempts by team members to explain the issues, management did nothing. 80% of the dev team staff left as a result, and things have continued to go downhill since. Employees were expected to work 7 days a week, into the evenings (unpaid overtime) and received little to no award for their hard work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to re-evaluate their estimations for work to ensure that teams have the time they need to complete the work. Managers need to connect with their employees and build healthy relationships with them. Debating minutiae and looking for places to pass the blame is not the right approach.

I have been working at Symantec full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Cutting edge products in domains like security and backup. The company has very strong principals as it pillars: Innovation, Action, Trust and Customer. And most of the employees try to live by it.

    Cons

The top management in India is not at all concerned about its employees. The most recent incident which had upset most of the employees is Kharadi movement. Majority of the Symantec employee had settled around baner area. No poll or survey was done and the office was moved to other end of the city which will easily cost additional 2+ hours of traveling time for most of the employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please be fair and employee considerate. The most important resource in software industry are not buildings and hardware but employees and their productive time.
