Former Employee - Administrative Assist in Agoura Hills, CA (US)

I worked at UnitedHealth Group full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Try to give raises every year (and some bonus).

Cons

After 6 1/2 years of devotion and only missing one day of work because of having to go into the hospital (unexpectedly). The company really doesn't care and closes the office you are working in and instead of letting you telecommute like every other person in the same office you get laid off!!!!!!!!!

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Care more about employees as you claim to care about members (they are members too).

Get 100% hike, have fun and leave!

Current Employee - Project Manager in Gurgaon, Haryana (India)

I have been working at UnitedHealth Group full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    1) Recruitment team - Recruitment team is just as dumb as it can be - they hunt for profiles, and hire. No salary negotiation, if you can guess how urgent the opening is - they will offer you out of the way salaries - people are offered 100% hikes. Directors approve all such exceptions.
    2) Heaven for female employees (with due respect to all women - please don't take me otherwise when you read this...) - Enjoy more often work from homes, in case you are planning family - you can get 1-2 months of work from home ahead of your due date, followed by 3 months of maternity leaves, and on top of it you can take one month additional leaves and followed by one month work from home. So a total of 6 months paid offs!
    3) Managers - Managers are not given any value by Sr. management they are treated as coordinators, so employee have full fun (well almost). Delivery manage is where mgmt gives some value, so this works well in favor of employees.
    4) This company has internal job posting - enjoy this as tool to get promotion, since managers are not believed and given value by sr management, so if you are good 'player' you can drive manger and keep asking him for promotion/salary hike- trust me 12-18 months is all it takes for a dumb but cunning employee to get both, if that doesn't work, apply for IJP and your manager will approve it and you are done. Come 18 months, apply another IJP :) Ladder up is simple for people who know how to drive manager :)

    Cons

Cons are Pros from employee standpoint (listed above) :), so here is the list:
    1) Poor recruitment team (specially in Hyderabad)
    2) Added flexibility for female employees
    3) Managers are not treated well by senior management
    4) Support services are hell here - facility, infrastructure, and real-estate teams work here like govt. employees and treat other departments poorly and there is no way to complain, escalate and hence team enjoys their position best! No one listens - ask anyone in this company and people will tell you the same :)

Current Employee - CST Administrative Assistant in Malvern, PA (US)
Current Employee - CST Administrative Assistant in Malvern, PA (US)

I have been working at UnitedHealth Group full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

If you are an admin assistant you make close to 14 an hour, or if you are in CST 15 an hour, appeals admin makes closer to 16, so the starting rate is ok. The bonuses are nice (can be up to 2000$ a quarter about if you do really good on your quota in CST), but there are NO raises at all so not really good long term. Essentially the most common job there is processing cases (data entry), which if you keep up with what you have to do the quota isnt too hard to meet and it can be low stress. You can work from home which is very common for many positions, the lower level CST AA position can be full time from home. Free food once a week, free soda and coffee any time. Mostly friendly people and co workers, nurses are very kind. Unlimited overtime in some departments. Time off is easy to get and vacation/holiday time is good.

    Cons

The only way to get a raise is to be promoted, and there are only about two spots up you can go, which is from 15 an hour to 16.50ish an hour, and then about 37-40k a year plus bonuses as a supervisor (though requires overtime fairly often). Occasionally they will have immense technical issues which can be frustrating, because they do not really make exceptions to it messing up your quota, though you can always make it up with high numbers. Their systems may be down for an hour or so on and off some days, or the systems could be very slow (though we do get paid to sit and wait for things to be fixed). They seem to have a lot of people leave in less than a year because its usually a job people use to hold them over since you cant get raises. You can do a lot to contribute to your team, but you are only recognized for the most part when you make a mistake or if they need you to do something. The company is now owned by united healthcare and their insurance is not too great for a big event (high deductible), but if you dont get sick getting prescriptions and regular doctor visits is no problem.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more people! we get swamped and can only do so much work, also give raises because each year taxes/rent go up but salary doesnt!
