I worked at YMCA as a contractor (more than 3 years)

Pros

The managers were very welcoming and excited to have new people. They also seem to really love their jobs. The customers are very pleasant, all families, and the facilities are beautiful. You also get a free membership during your employment and a discount membership for your family members.

Cons

In the child care dept, the parent is always right....which can be frustrating when dealing with a difficult child.

The YMCA staff are like a tightly knit family, and promote self growth in a warm community.

    I regret working there

I have been working at YMCA full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The pension contribution is really the only decent benefit they provide.

    Cons

The pay is not good, and generally the organization is just poorly managed. There is always a budget crisis, which ends in layoffs or cutbacks in hours for hourly staff. If you are on salary they make you work long hours, and expect you to be there nights and weekends. Top management is often unprofessional. I found there to be a strong undercurrent of homophobia.
