    Pros

    Nice colleagues, nice culture, nice place.

    Cons

    No training. Compensation depends on whether you work full time.

    Mix of large organization structure and mid-size office flexibility

    I worked at Environmental Defense

    Pros

    An excellent organization to work for in the areas where there is the largest funding. There is untapped potential in some areas that can be utilized more often, but the need goes to where the donations are greatest.

    Cons

    Sometimes, the executive management team focuses too much on a few individual contributors as compared to the team that took them to success.

    I have been working at Environmental Defense full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    -Great mission and cause to work for
    -More corporate than most non profits, more organized
    -Excellent flexibility and work-life balance

    Cons

    -Organization needs to invest in staff and training- management could use some help
    -Lack of upward mobility, especially for junior level staff- the organization fails to hire within
    -EDF doesn't always live up to its values- the lack of diversity, in terms of ethnicity and thought evidences this
    -Not as progressive or innovative as the organization touts itself to be

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. Invest in your people. If you're hiring management, they need to know how to manage projects as well as people. If they don't, get them training! It's unfair for staff to suffer under an inexperienced manager.

    2. Don't underestimate junior level staff. They deserve to be mentored and promoted. It's unfortunate that many of them end up leaving when they are more than qualified to move up in the EDF ranks.

    3. The organization is overwhelmingly.... not diverse. Hire people of different races, sexual orientations and political affiliations. With diversity in staff, you'll create more innovative solutions and different ways to approach issues that the organization would never be able to develop with the same voices and same experiences.

    I worked at Environmental Defense as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

    Nice and very smart colleagues;
    Interesting projects that enable you to learn a lot during the internship;
    Good work/life balance, no extra work after office hour.

    Cons

    Intern manager in office is not very helpful;
    Pay is relatively low;
    Limited cross-departmental communication.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Pay more to interns. Their contribution is considerable but their pay is less than TA job at school.

    I worked at Environmental Defense full-time

    Pros

    I enjoyed my time at EDF. It's a positive work environment with a lot of collaboration and opportunities for growth. They made a strong effort for the whole staff to know about the programs and feel inspired about the mission.

    Cons

    There were very few cons! I had challenges with a manager for part of my time there, but was always able to turn to other staff as mentors.

    I worked at Environmental Defense as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

    Lots of resources for domestic work; Great team of experts; good location and office environment;

    Cons

    unequal pay for interns; too many program managers that stand in the way; few chances for promotion; poor communication of future direction from NY HQ

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    The org. needs more young people to move the org. into the future. - promote from within and hire your interns (and pay them to show them to indicate value)

    I worked at Environmental Defense as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

    Everyone is down to earth, very intelligent, and passionate about what they do. If you care about the environmental space, there are a multitude of practice areas to learn about.

    Cons

    Unfortunately the pay is low because it is a non-profit. Additionally, there is not a lot of room for upward mobility because they hire many experiences professionals as upper-management. It's a great place to start out between graduation and graduate school.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    The culture is great and management has been great.

    Pros

    Great atmosphere, with smart, pragmatic people who value innovation and do not adhere to the typical dogmas of environmentalism. Good work-life balance. Wonderful focus on science-based environmentalism, including economics.

    Cons

    An organisation that is a little too full of itself, and sometimes lacks perspective. HR is often unresponsive, except when it comes to letting people go. Upper management in some programs are disengaged from their operational staff.
