    Pros

    Lots of resources for domestic work; Great team of experts; good location and office environment;

    Cons

    unequal pay for interns; too many program managers that stand in the way; few chances for promotion; poor communication of future direction from NY HQ

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    The org. needs more young people to move the org. into the future. - promote from within and hire your interns (and pay them to show them to indicate value)

    Pros

    Everyone is down to earth, very intelligent, and passionate about what they do. If you care about the environmental space, there are a multitude of practice areas to learn about.

    Cons

    Unfortunately the pay is low because it is a non-profit. Additionally, there is not a lot of room for upward mobility because they hire many experiences professionals as upper-management. It's a great place to start out between graduation and graduate school.

    The culture is great and management has been great.

    Pros

    Great atmosphere, with smart, pragmatic people who value innovation and do not adhere to the typical dogmas of environmentalism. Good work-life balance. Wonderful focus on science-based environmentalism, including economics.

    Cons

    An organisation that is a little too full of itself, and sometimes lacks perspective. HR is often unresponsive, except when it comes to letting people go. Upper management in some programs are disengaged from their operational staff.

    Pros

    EDF has very smart people who obviously care about making a positive difference. EDF also provides an excellent benefits package.

    Cons

    EDF is an extremely liberal organization staffed by people who think they are moderates. There is no diversity of thought from management who almost go out of their way to hire far left staffers. At EDF diversity only means skin color. EDF would be wise to follow Pew's model especially since so much of the money they raise comes from Republican donors. And this is why management puts on a bipartisan facade when meeting with its board and donors.

    The few conservatives on staff either hide their views or quickly learn that their input and analysis will be completely ignored and dismissed if it dares contradict some sacred liberal belief. Many of the goals at EDF are noble but management is so partisan and protective of Democratic interests that they will sacrifice their own agenda if it dares to upset other liberal NGOs or any Democratic politician in DC. For example, EDFs scientists determined fracking is safe and does not harm the water table yet their official statements were much less supportive so as not to upset the left. During cap and trade no one at EDF ever mentioned or discussed climategate because management primarily gets their news from MSNBC so they put their blinders on and pretended the scandal didn't exist. Then they were flabbergasted when climategate led to the death of their cap and trade bill. Most sadly, EDF management caved go the fascist voices on staff who refused to attend their annual retreat because it was being held at a beautiful hotel complex with a pro-American theme where Pat Robertson had a small stake in ownership.

    Lastly, no one advances up the chain unless their ideology comports with managements almost like a religious litmus test.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Diversity means thought not how much melanin one has in their skin. Start hiring a diverse group of people if you want to stay relevant.

    Pros

    EDF works on some amazing projects that are relevant and truly have the potential to impact ocean management. I feel that the Oceans Department's goals are realistic but also large enough to make a difference. The people in the San Francisco office are passionate, creative, and supportive; it was a delightful work environment.

    Difficult to obtain a full-time job in the organization.

    Very smart, passionate people working on a great cause. They are thoughtful and open to new ideas.

    Cons

    I was not impressed by the managers here. They tend to be well-respected in their fields, but were not ready to manage employees.

    Before giving an expert people to manage, please consider training them and offering transparent feedback systems.

    Pros

    Bright people, reasonable work-life balance, exciting projects, competitive compensation, entrepreneurial, taking cutting edges to solve the most difficult problems, has a diverse and helpful network that is used for fundraising but also advancing program goals, good focus on getting tangible, measurable environmental results, unusual discipline for a non-profit organization

    Cons

    Difficult to move up, some lack of transparency into management decisions, need to improve cross-programmatic work in some areas, tough to get a job, as it is a very competitive landscape with lots of applicants for almost every position that opens up

    Pros

    The organization does cool, important stuff.
    Most employees are smart and intense and dedicated to making the world a better place.
    The organization is focused strategically on getting stuff done.
    Risk taking is often supported.
    Lots of change.

    Cons

    Lots of change.
    Long hours and you're always on-call.
    Things can go from great to terrible without warning.
    Employees are disposable - I saw a number of people who were seemingly solid employees get systematically pushed out. It was an ugly process and people left angry and confused.
    Management is spotty. Most managers are subject experts and don't do much managing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Support and manage your talented employees. If someone is on the outs, or if changes are coming, give it to your employees straight.
