Former Employee – worked at Exar full-time for more than 10 years

ProsPeople were strongest attraction to company. Many, like me, were there for over 10 years. Under staffed marketing departments yielded great opportunities for hands on experiences, yet highlighted the continuing over investment in engineering resources.

ConsWhile achieving 40 years as a company in the valley is rare, it also highlights Exar's stagnation. Very successful core businesses like interface and communications perpetuated a rudderless ship. Over investment in non-growing businesses or acquisitions and under investment in core competencies kept Exar artificially small as compared to peers.

Advice to Senior ManagementNew management (2012) is focused solely on preparing for acquisition. Massive layoffs help stock and profitability, but longer term the Company does not have a strong product or technology road
map. Current management is only focused on short-term and their enrichment,

ProsExar has a nice soccer field and tennis court on site. Located conveniently at the center of the east bay.

ConsMarketing is not doing well in defining the product directions and specifications on existing products. With the lack of organization, marketing people seem out of place.

Advice to Senior ManagementExar has been transformed ever since the new CEO is in place, whether or not if this is lead to a positive change, the current CEO has done a tremendous achievement in terms of the stock price.

ProsFinancially secure company with a long history ( 40 years). A lot of employees have been with the company 10+ or 20+ years. A good work environment, friendly people, expectations are reasonable and coworkers are helpful. Compensation and benefits are both reasonable-- not outstanding, but fair. By Silicon Valley standards, a stable company where you know what you're going to get.

ConsExar struck me as overly resistant to change, which isn't a big surprise given how long it has been around. I also felt that Exar lacked an identity in a way that no other place I've worked has. What makes Exar Exar? I guess the fact that it's been around for 40 years-- every other place I've worked has something more tangible: advantages in customer service, engineering or pricing, etc. But for Exar I could never put my finger on it-- except to say that it's been around 40 years.

Advice to Senior ManagementFigure out what Exar does well and stick with it.

ProsIn general, Exar has competent employees who are nice people. There are lots of people with 10 or more years at the company who manage to keep the company going.

ConsExar has a broad focus for such a relatively small company (about 500 employees). It is easy for the smaller projects to get lost among the handful of larger projects.

Current Employee – been working at Exar

ProsJust by hiring people with big title, lazy, big salary and doing nothing just call for a meetings.
buying companies with no product that can make profit or enhance the company sales.

Cons1- Moving production to (offshore).
2- No new product.
3- Spent there cash by buying junk companies.
4- Sales party in Las Vegas & Sales = 0

Advice to Senior ManagementGo after good product and protect your hard working Engineers.
Do not wast your cash for for buying companies that loosing money and it will add more expense that EXAR can not handle.
