Good pay but lack of promoton opportunity!

Exploration Analyst (Current Employee)
Melbourne

I have been working at Exxon Mobil

ProsGood benefit, job security, good brand name, I guess if you are engineer or geologist, that's a good company to start with.

ConsYou will never get promoted if you can't make yourself the "chosen" one within 3 years. Very political, process driven, lots of "loyal" employees and the only thing they know is "cover your ass".

Advice to Senior ManagementTop down communication need to be better channeled. The company is too slow. Need to change the organisational structure to get rid of all those hierachical barriers. No incentive for young employees as promotion takes forever.

Satisfied Employee

Maintenance Engineer (Current Employee)
Baton Rouge, LA (US)

I have been working at Exxon Mobil full-time for more than 3 years

ProsSalary is great. Work days are different each day with new challenges. Flexible schedule as long as you are taking care of your business I think is a fair

ConsMany negative people that love talking about conspiracies and how others are unfairly getting promoted. Spend more time doing this than working.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe transparent and give low performers the closer they so desperately need.

Best place to start a career

Field Engineer (Former Employee)
Riyadh (Saudi Arabia)

I worked at Exxon Mobil full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe wide range of experienced field engineers allowed me to fit in and learn right away. Was not worried by my more experienced co-workers, they really looked out for me.

ConsExxon is a major player in the industry now and will be so in the future. Must be able to give the time and effort if you want to move up. I choose my family when we had our first child and left to stay closer to home. Will try to go back later if possible.

Advice to Senior ManagementNo advice. Loved the way management made things so clear.

No surprises. What you expect is what you get from a large company.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Houston, TX (US)

I have been working at Exxon Mobil full-time for more than 8 years

ProsStability in income. Great benefits. Good group of people to work with, mostly nice people. Risk averse, lot of layers of management makes sure that the project that is eventually done is a project that is worth doing.

ConsLarge company that moves slowly. Lot of layers of management. Few people working and lot of people taking credit for their work. Painful to get projects done.

Advice to Senior ManagementCut the fat in middle management. Senior management has some really good ideas that if implemented would make this company even greater. The ideas eerily resemble what the working class level people want to do and think is great. However, the middle management acts as a shock absorber leaving it difficult for any change to happen.

Autonomy is great; very bureaucratic; pay and benefits are excellent

Attorney (Current Employee)
Houston, TX (US)

I have been working at Exxon Mobil full-time for more than 10 years

ProsProfessionals are given freedom to do their jobs without interference; very dynamic pace; exposure to issues you'll not see anywhere else; pay and benefits are excellent

ConsMany in management need to work on their people skills (a good technician isn't necessarily cut out to manage a staff)

Advice to Senior ManagementThin staffing is a frequent challenge

For those who love formality and processes.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Exxon Mobil full-time

ProsThis is a great company for someone who is right out of grad school. The salary and benefits are excellent and you will pay of those student loans in no time.

ConsThere is no work life balance. It is a very fast-paced, formal, structured, process and guideline heavy environment.

The rating and ranking process is brutal and destroys employee morale.
