I have been working at Fluor full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Strong Engineering autonomy and integrity. personal growth opportunities with internal online resources, key personnel are targeted for growth but bulk of work force is kept as status quo.

    Cons

Departmental favoritism in staffing projects. Department is led by ex project engineer with no relavant technical experience to manage a technical department. Be careful of out of office assignments as there is unlikely to be a job to return to. You get laid off before even returning to office.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do a better job of finding positions for employees who are not in the home office

GOOD OLD BOY LEGACY SYSTEM AT THE VERY BEST!

I worked at Fluor full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Excellent compensation, good benefits, at least you are paid to give your life to this place.

    Cons

Lots of dead wood, good old boy system in full force. You can be a total IDIOT but if your parent, spouse or friend is in a Director, HR or PM position, then you have the Golden Ticket. It's no wonder the Greenville, SC campus is a ghost town; they have priced their own selves out of the market with all of the overhead and the "that's the way we've always done it" attitude.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Drop the arrogant attitude and the constant story of a "huge backlog" of work to your stockholders. And you expect your project workload to pickup in what century?

I worked at Fluor full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

There are great online resources through the Intranet for continuing education and you have the ability to easily find and contact colleagues around the world for collaboration and help. Compensation seems to be more than average and benefits are excellent. Like anywhere, there are good members of management and others who are not so great. Fluor has well thought-out processes and structures for the way they conduct business, so it's easy to learn a new job with a little dedication toward reading the available procedures and exploring the Intranet for information.

    Cons

I think there are way too many layers of management and it seems certain people gain favor for promotion over others regardless of experience, contributions, and professionalism. The good ol' boy network and nepotism reign supreme. Be careful navigating the political waters. There are lots of family members working together and many apparently less than qualified members of management who hang on the coattails of those who are dedicated and truly interested in what is going on. Jobs can be very narrow in scope, and thus become monotonous and boring to a thinking individual.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider streamlining and reducing the layers. Encourage the the worker bees to grow and move up to management if they show interest and initiative rather than looking outside to hire new college grads to groom and promote ahead of them. Finally, when internal job candidates apply, treat them as though they're valuable and provide some feedback when they aren't chosen for an interview or when another candidate is chosen. Help them become qualified for the next step in their careers and mentor them.

    Pros

Company pays good, bosses are very cool and cooperative, company's operational set up requirements are very nice and clean i.e wonderful environment to work in with.

    Cons

Hard work required some times in shifts that disturbs life set up, but over all its a good progressive company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should try to keep an eye on every individual.
If the company is operating in multi cultural country or environment kindly heir a balanced work force , do not increase a particular number of nationality in work force because it becomes the reason for politics in company and departments as well as personal growth stops due to being left alone.

    Pros

Available training within company. Promotions possible. Travel available. Adequate and competitive pay.

    Cons

Cliques can be roadblocks to personal growth and promotion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider yourself team members instead of disciplinarians and authoritarians. Upper management should be more aware of project managers' leadership styles on jobsites and do away with cliques, holier than thou attitudes, and tough guy mentalities. Fostering a team is much more valuable and fruitful than whipping the underlings. Fear of being judged harshly and reprimanded unjustly does not produce contented and dedicated employees. It was always very disappointing to witness a jobsite run according to these principles. With this being said, I must add that there are some very good managers with excellent skills, values and work ethics within the Fluor organization.
