I have been working at Genentech as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

Great work/life balance. Good pay. Overall good culture.

    Cons

Cultural segregation between contractors and employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand there are liabilities with contractors but they put as much dedication and passion into their work as regular employees and should share in the many events on/off campus that don't discuss internal company business info. I'm no attorney but they could sign some waivers can't they?

    - backup care decreased from 20 to 10 days
    - no longer value administrative roles, we now feel expendable whereas before the Roche merger we were valued like everyone else

bring back work from home ability for all to have a better work/life balance

I have been working at Genentech full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Depending on your manager and department, the company has a great work/home balance. I've been fortunate to have managers that will work with direct reports to find best balance between work and family demands.

Growth opportunities are largely network driven. Ambition and innovation are rewarded. Mantra of casual intensity holds true.

    Cons

Development opportunities vary widely by department. Career path is not clearly defined. Like most companies, you must be your own advocate.

I have been working at Genentech as a contractor

    Pros

Their pay is above average for contractors. The SSF site is beautiful, the bay trail is nice break from all those lab hours. Free coffee, milk, and ice tea. Cafeteria is relatively cheap and edible.

    Cons

Management, communication, big pharma, they treat contractor like crap. I get that contractors don't receive the same benefit as regular employees, but that doesn't give them the right to treat contractors as crap. If something goes wrong, it's automatically the contractor's fault, the management people don't want to take responsibility so the blame the contractor. Some departments are very disorganized, like the management don't even know what training you need to do for certain qualifications. They over stress that contractors don't get benefits, it's like gosh I know I don't have health care and can't go to events. They over stress that contractors should not be doing this this and this. Getting a tiring and annoying real fast.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Contractors are people too, we work as much or even harder than full time employees. Please treat contractors nicer, so contractors don't feel so outcasted.
