I worked at Genentech as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

    Cafe, nice atmosphere, beautiful building.

    Cons

I could go on about several things that made me feel below the people I worked for. Being a contractor at Genentech (at least in the department I worked in), I was treated very unequal. They make it known that you are not a part of the team. We were not allowed to go to any of the company events (I understand the liability factor) but my supervisor didn't do much to make me feel appreciated for my hard work, or my co-worker (a contractor as well). I felt that since we couldn't be included in the company events, she should have taken it upon herself to do some sort of "employee appreciation" for the contractors in her department. Several contractors I have spoken with agreed that permanent employees make it known that "non-blue badge employee's" are easily disposable and not appreciated like they should be. One specific co-worker of mine, a permanent employee, would rub it in everyone's faces about the perks of being a blue-badge. She bragged about her bonuses, benefits, material things like the special items she would receive for going to employee events. Not to mention, she is the epitome of a micro-manager, and she doesn't even have the title of being a lead. It's a great company to work for, if you are a permanent employee.

I have been working at Genentech full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Friendliest staff imaginable, free espresso/coffee, unending opportunities to learn and grow within the company

    Cons

None, this place is doing it right. Well, I guess the only downside would be that the facility is 24 hours and grave shift is a potential possibility.

I have been working at Genentech full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The campus is world class. The company is very supportive of employees and the community. Culture is hard to beat. Benefits are amazing.

    Cons

Organization is surprisingly immature for such a large, established company. Can be frustrating trying to get something done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in organizational development. Don't rely so heavily on temps.

I worked at Genentech as a contractor (more than a year)

    Pros

    1. The people I have met here are amazing - definitely live by the motto "work hard, play hard"
    2. Very accommodating and understanding in terms of days off, sicknesses, emergency, etc.
    3. Are concerned with your overall end goal and help you go towards it
    4. Good pay
    5. Worked at oceanside location, which was very nice building and near the beach!

    Cons

My number 1 problem with Genentech, and is causing misery for all my coworkers, is the treatment of contractors. They separate us for everything and limit our access to any possible benefit - events, services, facilities, opportunities - even emergency notifications!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start treating contractors as an equal. They do just as much work (usually more) as permanent employees. Pretty soon you will lose all your contractors, who I know are valuable to the success of your products.

I worked at Genentech full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Having worked in operations for eight years in Vacaville, South San Francisco and Oceanside, South San Francisco is by far the best location and still has a strong Genentech culture, Outside of San Francisco the culture is less noticeable, but in general People are nice, benefits are good not great. Ho-Ho's are nice , work can be challenging, co-workers are supportive

    Cons

Working in Vacaville or Oceanside pay is low, stock options are almost non existent, weak culture, poor management, management shoots from the hip with no clear plan or strategies. Managers are not leaders but "yes" men and women. Nearly impossible to advance to a new position unless you are part of the "in crowd". If you want the five star rating work in South San Francisco, Vacaville and Oceanside are disappointments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make an effort to strengthen the culture at Vacaville and Oceanside, allow internal applicants to advance their careers, improve contractor workers work conditions, fire managers that do not understand metrics and who manage their departments by threatening employees.

I worked at Genentech full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Big Company with stability and future growth since they became Roche.

    Cons

Contractors are alienated. Also, be ready to get on the lemmings train...conform....or goodbye
to you. The funny thing is, they try to push outside the box thinking....but shun you when you speak up.
And this coming from MULTIPLE people ( more ex employees as well) = Way too much Politics and drama in Oceanside.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't try to manage every aspect of every person. Some people are good at certain things and not so much at others. Don't use tactics like upgrading a system to relieve yourself from people that are less fortunate.
Also, Introverts are not bad people. Some of the greatest minds ever were that way.
