Unparalleled training directed to customer service.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Giant Eagle

ProsGreat family feeling amongst co-workers.

ConsGetting promoted not easy for everyone.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to look at older, more experienced workers and compensate accordingly. They were often overlooked, but are really the foundation of the stores success.

Great for College Students

Cash Office (Current Employee)
Cleveland, OH (US)

I have been working at Giant Eagle full-time for less than a year

ProsFrom my experience if you work hard they are willing to be very accommodating and offer the opportunity to move up

I really like my coworkers.

I'm usually able to get enough hrs (with a few exceptions)

ConsPay is low. Employees with more responsibility aren't necessary compensated accordingly.

Personally I was disappointed that only managers, etc were permitted to work overtime.

I have been working at Giant Eagle full-time for more than 7 years

Prosgood pay and mostly good people

Consrotates managers a lot, but can be a good thing-some people play favorites

Advice to Senior Managementgo with seniority and consider whats its like to work in a different department that you have never worked in.

Bittersweet, and not worth it unless its a "filler" job

Pharmacy Technician (Current Employee)
Pittsburgh, PA (US)

I have been working at Giant Eagle part-time for less than a year

Pros-The people you work with are awesome. All of them are friendly and helpful and will teach you how to be successful at your job.

Cons-The people you meet. Most of them are very rude and only care about getting their medication.
-Very hectic.
-The pay is terrible. A high schooler can get paid more.
-Two 15-minute breaks for an 8 hour shift or above. Try working 10 hours with two 15-minute breaks while 300 customers beg for their medications.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay your employees better, and have more people in the pharmacy at all times.

okay job for high school kids

Cashier (Former Employee)
Columbus, OH (US)

I worked at Giant Eagle part-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat co workers. It is an okay job if you are just looking for spending money on the weekends

ConsTreated like babies by management.
Managers act like they are Gods gift to the world who seem to enjoy bossing people around

Advice to Senior ManagementGive more hours for you managers to schedule. having 3 checkout lines open on the weekend is not a smart idea for getting customers in and out quickly and creates a horrible shopping experience.

My Giant Eagle experience was great!

Cashier (Former Employee)
Roaring Spring, PA (US)

I worked at Giant Eagle part-time for more than a year

ProsThere are many pros to working at Giant Eagle. I loved the employees and also the scheduling was awesome. If I needed off work I put it in the computer with a reasonable amount of time to notify my manager and I never had a problem. Also I liked that I was paid every week. Plus I liked the hours that I worked, either 10-6 or 11-7.

ConsOne of the only cons that I can think of is that I sometimes had to get carts while it was raining outside. Other than that I have no complaints.

Advice to Senior ManagementI have no suggestions for the management that was in my store, I felt like everyone there did a great job.

Friendly environment makes up for somewhat faulty management

Deli Clerk (Current Employee)
Powell, OH (US)

I have been working at Giant Eagle part-time for more than a year

ProsFlexibility of hours.
Friendly work environment.
Great for students--I could retain employment while on leave for school and resume whenever I came home.
Pay is slightly higher than minimum wage.
Fantastic pre-employment training.

ConsDepartment managers need more training.
It's a customer service job. Some customers are easier to deal with than others, some will haunt your dreams, etc.
Easy job to get--this department in particular has a high turnover rate.

Advice to Senior ManagementSpring for the slightly more educated applicants. Some of the financial decisions made by managers with limited business knowledge cost the store significant amounts of money.

Good for a certain type of employee.

Marketing Manager (Former Employee)
Pittsburgh, PA (US)

I worked at Giant Eagle full-time for more than a year

ProsThe CEO is tremendous, and I truly believe she understands employee needs and wants to improve the culture. Her plan for improving communication is a good one. However, the levels below her simply do not share the desire to implement it. The benefits and pay are very good, as well.

ConsLet there be no mistake... this is definitely a company that says one thing and does another. And it encourages and rewards those employees who find ways of justifying what the executives already want to do. The "form" of communication (how you present data) is more important than the "matter" (what the data says). This is very dangerous in a company, as it suggests a rigidity that can affect profits and longevity. There are also clear distinctions between those employees who are willing to work 24/7 and those who have outside lives.

Advice to Senior ManagementNot everything is a crisis. Every problem has small causes, which you tend to ignore until they're full-blown disasters.

Meh

Cashier (Former Employee)
Pittsburgh, PA (US)

I worked at Giant Eagle part-time for less than a year

ProsSome people are funny/funny and bizzare to work with. Let's face it-grocers can hire some interesting characters.
Chatting with customers is fun
You get breaks
Uniforms are decent

ConsReally low pay starting out, pay raises are a joke
Standing for hours on end with breaks that are too short
Rude customers who expect you to be superman and do everything just as they expect
Often idiotic management

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to take how the lower tiers feel into consideration
