I worked at Google full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The people are definitely the most talented I've ever worked with. The culture is friendly and laid back, and they do a lot to foster awareness about topical issues like diversity in STEM and privacy issues. I've learned a lot of technical and soft skills.

    Cons

It is no longer a start-up. You are one of many stars, all competing to outshine each other. Recognition is hard to obtain, unless you work on one of the very few shiny projects. It is very Calfornia-centric, with the commensurate decrease in life quality doing late evening meetings a lot. Stack ranking is a big demotivator.

I have been working at Google as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I began working part time while I was still in college. Over a span of 3 years, and several projects, I've had a variety of mentors that have helped me grow and develop my skills. I work in Corporate Engineering which has the casual culture, with a hard work ethic, that Google is known for. Everywhere you turn there are collaborative spaces that let teams and individuals meet on the fly. Have a problem that's been bugging you... take a time out and go play a game. You never know when the next person you run into may have the solution that you've been looking for.

    Cons

Elitist culture in many parts of the company. The org that I work in seems to value its consultants and temp work more than a lot of other areas, so it can be difficult working with another group that treats you like a second-class citizen, especially if you have a non-ivy degree.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize that an expensive diploma doesn't necessarily mean good employee. And knowing all the right answers on paper doesn't always translate to being able to put that knowledge to work.

I worked at Google full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The people are wonderfully nice, the perks are great. Some of their projects are really interesting.

    Cons

It's a huge company. It's hard to stay agile and responsive when you've got 50,000 employees.

I have been working at Google as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Lots of opportunities to learn and grow. Nice and helpful employees. Larry and Sergey are really cool.

    Cons

You can burn yourself by overworking if you are not careful. You have to make sure you maintain a good life-work harmony. Many of technologies you learn are Google internal only.

    I worked at Google

    Pros

The whole hierarchy is very flat which is really great as you can talk to anybody with whom you have a topic to talk about. There are many very interesting people in the office.

    Cons

There is a lot of internal technology within the company. This is great to do work inside but means than many skills are not transferable.
