In the early years it was exciting and challenging but as the years passed it became to mechanized and robotic.

    I have been working at H E B full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great salary and benefits. Very progressive company with ample opportunities for promotion if you perform. Training programs are excellent if you have a great trainer. Nice discount card for family purchases.

    Cons

Over the years the family owned atmosphere has diminished and the environment is political at times. At times promises are made and broken in regards to ongoing training and promotions. Hiring to fill positions from outside the company with very qualified internal applicants can be frustrating.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you make a commitment, stick to it. Be more upfront with your people when it comes to promotional opportunities vs. skirting the issue(s) on why one is not being considered for promotions. The company continues to grow, don;t become another Walmart, stay personable with your Partners.

I have been working at H E B full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Discounts, free stuff promotions, flexible schedules that work with schooling or second job...

    Cons

I'm 1.5 months pregnant (only, but still) and they asked me to push carts in 43° nighttime drizzle. Spoke to Admin & she said unless I show proof of a "medical restriction", I had to do my job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

MGMT: Take the Open Door policy more seriously. Upper MGMT: Do not get after Dept. Managers for doing their job when they discipline an employee who is not being a good partner.

    I have been working at H E B (more than 3 years)

    Pros

If you are a people person this is the company for you! Make sure you show up with your badge on shiny and in place smile plastered to your face and be ready to pass off as much of your daily work to your other department workers as possible. It's all about delegating! No really that is what they look for , make sure you can pass it off and get on to bigger issues of breaks and lunches and hiding any flaws from customers eyes. Managers are a joke here.

    Cons

Old school partners, no accountable people. No help to amount to anything if they are found at peak times. Poor management skills and in many departments language barriers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Training.
