Non-typical project, very high functioning teams of PE's and PM's from all over the country.

Senior Project Engineer (Current Employee) Portland, OR (US)

ProsYou could call them fox hole friendships, but the people I met and the relationships that have been formed are for life. This company employs some true aces ! Great collaborative experience as well as the opportunity to run on your own.

The transition from Howard S. Wright to Balfourbeatty has been rough for the "old guard" but I believe this will make for a much more sophisticated and powerful construction management team from Seattle in the north to San Diego and Arizona in the south. Throughout the West Region this company is poised to grab a larger share of many markets by initial brand recognition (HSW) and deeper financial/management resources (BBC). HSW/BBC will be one of the top 5 companies within a couple years.

ConsOn this particular project, senior management doesn't seem to trust their middle management team to manage change orders. Absolutely everything is micromanaged down to the penny. No one knows what the budgets are and senior management is not sharing. It is very difficult to get a change order signed; incredibly frustrating.

Advice to Senior ManagementUnderstand that open communication fosters better relationships. Be transparent with project controls and let your PM's do their job on their own. Stop trying to get employee compliance through fear tactics. A well treated employee will go to war for you whereas a beat down, constantly berated employee will let the enemy in.

    Grinds and Burns People Out

Senior Project Manager (Current Employee) Portland, OR (US)

    ProsA paycheck
    Not much travel
    Annual golf tournament
    Everyone is equally unsatisfied

Cons-70-80 hour work weeks are typical
    -1.4% payraises
    -Motivates through fear
-High turnover (30%-50% on Intel Projects), so you are constantly doing 2-3 peoples jobs during the constant cycle of replacing employees who quit
-No leadership, constant confusion over who's in charge.
    -Extremely unprofessional (borderline racist) environment
-Burning you out is their goal
-Senior managment views you as a number
    -Extremely political environment
    -Zero transparency

Advice to Senior ManagementPay employees what they are worth and allow them the freedom to grow. The CEO is unanimously disliked by the vast majority of the company and only when he steps down will this company be allowed to truly succeed.

    Average Construction Company

    Project Manager (Current Employee)

    ProsFinishes projects on schedule.
Most employees are enjoyable to be around.
Can perform a wide variety of projects.
Does not excessively change order owner.

    ConsNo emphasis on employee retention
Below average industry salaries: Project Engineers: 48-58k, PM's: 105-110k
Good ole boy culture that values field experience over intelligence.
Understaffs jobs which result in 70-80 work weeks with no overtime
Very poor pay raise philosophy, recently gave PM's 1.5% annual raise despite record year for profits.
    Zero transparency in bonus structure.
Upper management has too many field promoted employees which results in a motivate through fear culture.
Is behind industry technology curve. Is not a trend setter, but a follower.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease employee salaries so the company can retain its best employees. Increase transparency so employees can set goals.
