Former Employee – worked at ITT Technical Institute part-time for more than 3 years

ProsRewarding for teachers, flexible opportunities for events for students. Campus facilities may vary, but have office basics. Hopefully you can get your own desk here.

ConsSome practices may be rigid and unflexible; ironically, management style widely varies from each school and each department

Advice to Senior ManagementGive flexibility to teaching styles. Listen to your professors and adjuncts since they interact with the students directly.

ProsTheir pay and raises are good.

ConsFrom an organizational standpoint, ITT is in the business of scamming. They prey on uneducated, low income individuals to come to their school with no entrance exam. Once in, they use a standardized curriculum that teaches very little. They encourage teachers to pass everyone in their class and, as such, a true picture of the student is never achieved. If someone comes in truly committed to their education, learns on their own, and is a very determined/studious person, they might be successful but most students that choose ITT don't have that foundation.

Once these students are set to graduate, it is virtually impossible to place them in "in field" jobs. The Career Services departments across the company have so much turnover, true relationships with employers in the area are impossible to maintain. Oftentimes, employers will hire the graduates into entry level roles and then they get fired because their skill set is so lacking. In order to inflate their placement numbers, they have a system of capturing "in field" and "related field" post-graduate positions. Sometimes the students fills the form out and has to say if they consider it to be a job related to their field of study, but most of the time it is all done verbally and they will stretch just about any position. This is not necessarily the fault of the Career Services staff, but rather the push from upper management to make sure to hit the numbers.

It is ALL about the numbers. Enrollments, money, placement, graduation rate, etc. There is so much micromanaging to the numbers (even down to tracking how many phone calls an employee made in a day) that it makes every position here miserable.

The turnover of the company should be a clear indicator of how bad it is.

The private loans they require students to apply for and take are borderline illegal! They have interest rates up to 28% with monthly payments as high as $500!!! A person making $45K a year would have trouble with making that payment, let alone an average ITT grad who is either unemployed OR underemployed.

Advice to Senior ManagementSHUT IT DOWN. Quit micromanaging. Quit focusing on profit and actually care about education and students.

ProsThey pay is pretty good.

ConsDon't work here. The hours are horrible. Work at least two late nights until 9 PM and at least every other Saturday if not more. If there is an orientation, a phone a thon, open house you are expected to be there. Reps and financial aid are expected to work and stay late at the drop of a hat. Don't make plans for after work because you might have to stay late. There is no work life balance. Oh and they make you work holidays. That is usually decide this the week before a holiday after you have already made plans. They say it is required and you will be written up if you don't come in. Doesn't matter if you have plans either. Turn over is rampant at this place especially in the Admissions department, but all departments are effected. The goals that you are given to reach are unrealistic, and if management is expected to hammer people to meet these unrealistic goals. Upper management is a complete joke, and headquarters give no support. HQ doesn't roll out new procedures that are well planned. They throw things out at the last minute and expect the employees in the field to deal with it. This company is horrible.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of the CEO. He has run this company in the ground.

ProsSurprisingly, ITT is actually committed to helping people get a real education; however, it's not right school for everyone. (students have to show up and do the work!) There are a lot of negative reviews here, primarily from the reps. At most ITT schools, reps come and go - they are the sales side of the business. If they don't make their numbers or if say the wrong thing to a shopper, they are let go. They are under a microscope. Then again, their job is simply to make calls, hope people show up for their appointments, and eventually enroll. The academic side is so different. These positions require faculty members to have a certain level of education (usually a Masters) and the work they assign the students is not easy.

ConsFrom what I said above about the reps - it's a tough and stressful job, and most don't last.

Some of the directors have no experience in management (at least at my campus) and it shows.

Also, sales people having to deal with true academic types can be difficult. You can definitely see the separation between the two groups.

Advice to Senior ManagementEach campus is a different story. It really depends on how the Campus Director, the other Directors (finance, career services, recruitment, registrar) and the Dean work together. There are a lot of chiefs and sometimes, not a lot of experience. My advice to management - take some courses in management or at least read Covey!

I have met Mr. Modany and I will say that I appreciate his efforts, his commitment and his focus on the future.

ProsLearn sales skills, get to work whith a team and sometimes get to help people with their career choices. If you are a SALES person you will do great at this job and make very good money.

ConsThe Admissions Rep job is advertised to make you think, you will be helping students and doing counseling by helping them through the admissions process. The reality is that you will be expected to enroll every student with meet with regardless of what's best for the potential student. It is really a sales position and you are there to increase enrollment. You work in a call center type environment wiht at least 10 other "admissions" personnel. If you don't meet the enrollment goals you will be let go just like any other sales job. I'm not a sales person I'm a career counselor and job coah so it was not a good fit for me to be there so I left after 6 months.

ProsIt was one of the best and worst experiences of my life. I had the opportunity to be a student and an employee.

ConsI had the opportunity to be a student and an employee. There was no line between the two at times.

Advice to Senior ManagementPay less attention to the bottom line and more attention to student satisfaction.

Current Employee – been working at ITT Technical Institute full-time for more than a year

ProsDecent pay. Really, thats all I got.

ConsBenefits are expensive, hours are long/late into nights and weekend, nationalized policies (leaves no room for campuses to grow or operate properly), management is totally disconnected from the problems and just are interested in numbers to show share holders, no academic standard for students(student are passed along through classes to get a result, all the while ITT knows full well they can barely read or accomplish the job at hand), too expensive, no career growth for internal employees, poor financials(always writing off bad debt because students arent letting them get away with the unethical practices), everything about this place is a lie. Dont ever take a job here. Dont ever attend school here. In the end its not worth the stress and the drama.

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit. You have run a somewhat marketable product into the ground. You fail as managers. This school deserves what it gets for losing money, federal funding, quality employees & the bad rep it has to the public.
