A collaborative environment with a lot of responsibility, even for an intern.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Imperial Oil full-time for less than a year

Pros- Strong culture
- Great intelligent people
- A lot of responsibility
- Never boring
- Sense of community and collaboration
- Continuous Improvement

Cons- Bureaucratic to the maximum
- Too many processes
- Forced distribution performance rankings that do not promote teamwork per se
- Sometimes hard to communicate with others in various departments and levels of the company (a lot of people to sift through / a lot of personnel changes and role ambiguity)

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

The best company to get an experience

Research Technologist (Current Employee)
Sarnia, ON (Canada)

I have been working at Imperial Oil full-time for less than a year

ProsImperial Oil may be one of the best company to start your career if you want to work in the petroleum industry. First of all, it offers you a lot of opportunities to learn in a number of different aspects. It provides you various trainings. You feel that you are fully trusted about your knowledge by other senior employees.

ConsThere is not really challenging tasks. If you are familiar with working in fast-paced laboratory environment already, you would not find any difficulty getting tasks done in a timely manner (According to my experience). Furthermore, IT service is really slow-paced since ExxonMobil took over most part of IOL. Other than that, I cannot find any problems to work for this company

Great company to work for

Territory Manager (Current Employee)
Calgary, AB (Canada)

I have been working at Imperial Oil full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat work-life balance
Opportunity to work in multiple / different roles throughout a career

ConsToo many inefficient / slow / cumbersome processes and controls
Not enough delegation of authority - need an approval for almost anything

Advice to Senior ManagementEmcourage and actively support process simplification / streamlining

If you want a company for life, Imperial Oil is an option

Co-op Intern (Engineering) (Former Employee)
Edmonton, AB (Canada)

I worked at Imperial Oil as an intern for less than a year

ProsIf you want a safe career for life, this is one of the better options. Great pay, amazing benefits, and the company tries hard to keep you there for life.

ConsRidiculous bureaucratic. It took me a full month to get computer access for a 4 month co-op term... The company is so paranoid about keeping everything secret and iit goes to extremes.

Great summer student experience!

Summer Student (Former Employee)
Calgary, AB (Canada)

I worked at Imperial Oil as an intern for less than a year

ProsI learned a lot from my experience as a summer student. Everyone is really supportive. If you express interest in a certain topic/department, they will make sure you get a chance to explore that interest. Great chance to network and learn about other departments. NAP program is really helpful. Work is very process-oriented, but challenging and interesting all at once.

ConsI really can't think of anything.

Very Good Place To Work!!!

Maintenance Engineer (Former Employee)
Nanticoke, ON (Canada)

I worked at Imperial Oil full-time for more than 3 years

ProsPay is very good and the savings and retirement plans are superb
Lots of opportunities and there are many career paths available
Rewarding work and they ensure every employee plays an important role
The safety culture is extremely strong and the risk assessment structure is very strong and effective.

ConsThe forced ranking system demoralizes employees.
Opportunities within the company are in less than desirable places to live
Work-life balance could be better

Advice to Senior ManagementManagers always advertise how great it is to move locations and how that is the way to be successful. Management needs to understand that most families these days have both parents working and that it is very tough to pick-up and leave. More encouragement to stay in one facility should be given.

This company is like a camp

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Imperial Oil full-time for more than 5 years

ProsYou get money to pay your bills

ConsIts too much politics and sucking up to Management
I agree that Managers are puppets to Exxon
If you are not liked by Managers, they do not represent you in their "ranking" session.
No bonus
You do not get recognized for your work
Also agree with the comment that you do not know your career path or really have a say in it
Extremely conservative
Hard to move up unless you are an engineer or be recognized.
Extremely retro-active in decision making. Not a market leader at all.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to employees
Understand staff
Push to get rid of rankings
Stop playing favorites

have had an extremely rewarding career but times are changing

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Imperial Oil full-time for more than 10 years

ProsOutstanding safety culture, rewarding career and allot of variety in different roles

ConsAllot of red tape and allot of old leaders from EXXON now running this company. Not the people company that used to exist. Too much toward $$ and safety stats and no longer an employee company

Advice to Senior ManagementUpper management needs to get back to listening to the employees because the leaders at the top of IOL are EXXON puppets that don't understand IOL and Canadian culture
