Contractors Beware. Be Prepared to do the work of a regular full-time employee without the "Great Place to Work Value"

I worked at Intel Corporation full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Fantastic Learning Opportunities. The most advanced microprocessors in the world. Intel owns the facilities and spends copious amounts on Research and Development.

    Cons

Swearing, yelling, blaming, pointing the finger, and just plain unprofessionalism. It depends on what lab you work in. Some managers have too much time and others not enough. Some managers spend a great deal of time "spying" on employees. I guess it's the same in any company, but I thought Intel had higher standards.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Blue badge employees, supervisors, managers, and team leads are placing too much responsibility on Green Badge employees and or the contingent workforce.

I have been working at Intel Corporation full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Work on cutting edge technology well before others in the industry even realize it.

Ability to do whatever you want, and you can switch your job from one group to the other to promote constant learning

    Cons

Not the best salary, Not the best employee benefits, decision making is dragged by management. A lot of politics and fighting between teams doing similar work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company is huge, and should offload 10 to 15% of non-performing staff

I worked at Intel Corporation as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

Fairly professional environment. The corporation seemed like they actually cared about their employees.

    Cons

As a contractor, some of the management obviously weren't as nice to us.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

One manager told me, "you don't get to ask for that, you are a contractor." Ok, thanks for putting me in my place. Since we were moving cubicles, I just thought I would ask for the one I wanted.

I have been working at Intel Corporation full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    Sabbatical every 7 years rocks

    Cons

Too much middle management, too rigid telecommuting policy, slow to react, blinders

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is a bad funk permeating the culture. Innovation is not cultivated or appreciated at too many levels. Too many short-sighted middle managers driving creativity and the next "new thing" right out of the employee/company. For all the talk of being exciting, vibrant, cutting edge, that may have been the case over a decade ago but the atmosphere is anything but that today. While we are now comfortably in the lead in technology, most of the people that sacrificed to make that happen have already been shown the door by now. Stop cutting your lifeblood. Stop cow-towing to Wall Street. Take care of your employees and treat them appropriately. They achieve every wild prediction that a new CEO spouts, yet when it is time for salary bumps, you hide behind statistics and hyperbole. You want above and beyond? Be that.

I worked at Intel Corporation as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Big full-fledged company and have many different jobs in multiple disciplines and you can get a good exposure to the latest technology and tools.

    Cons

Employees are not much valued, and sometimes kicked out based on peer reviews. They frequently lay off because of too many employees, and almost everyone seems to fear that.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My manager didn't take any interest and was mostly unaware of what I was doing. And the problem is that everyone relies entirely upon the manager's word-of-mouth.
