Great company to work for, Amazingly talented people

Engineering Leader (Current Employee) Santa Clara, CA (US)

Pros- Very open / candid culture
    - Very talented people (world class experts on the topic at hand)
    - Management open to moving people around, so you get diverse sets of experiences

Cons- Currently (mid 2014) uncertain future. This poses a challenge on many levels throughout the corporation
    - "Pie" is not growing, so politics is
    - Like any large company, it all depends on your manager. So be sure to pay a lot of attention to who you are reporting to. Within the company, your experience will vary a lot

Advice to Senior Management- Allow more experimental culture (and less process driven)
    - Take some aggressive action to remove the perception of "empire building" and growth based on political connections

Great technology, strong brand but company size matters!

Director of Marketing (Former Employee) Santa Clara, CA (US)

ProsIntel is a juggernaut in the corporate technology world and a recognized brand. Have competitive salaries with great benefits (health, RSU) and a 60 day paid sabbatical program for all FT employees after 7 years of service. A lot of opportunity to switch positions and try new technologies and markets. When you have a strong manager and a fun and creative team...it's a great place to work

ConsToo big for it's own good...you become a number and it's difficult to make a big impact. Can easily get lost in the crowd and not enough financial or career motivation to work extra to get ahead...complacency is rampant because of the benefits. Too many internal promotions to middle managers with direct report responsibility who should not be handling people's careers. Intel losing big time in mobile and consumers don't see Intel as a relevant company despite what management thinks and the kool-aide they serve. Office politics are increasing and end up spending more time and energy internally rather than on customers or growing market share.

Advice to Senior ManagementGreater scrutiny to how they promote internally to give people direct report responsibilities. Too many managers should not be allowed in their role which only creates a toxic environment. Invest and innovate as much as possible to win in mobile...Intel is losing and not relevant yet and has a ton of work to do. At the entrance to Intel's HQ office says..."innovation is everything"...it's time to live up to that belief.

ProsGreat history and respectable work culture.

    ConsHighly internally looking company.
Not hiring the best people past few years. This will hurt company long term.

Advice to Senior ManagementNo longer a best destination for software jobs

A place where you can have a big impact

Business Development (Current Employee) Santa Clara, CA (US)

ProsThe center of the computer industry and probably the best of the chip companies to work for. Large number of very smart, hard-working people. Very good total compensation package. Management takes extraordinary measures to avoid large layoffs. Ability to gain experience in multiple disciplines. High ethical standards.

ConsLack of growth limits upward mobility. Large, geographically dispersed organization and long product design cycles can make decision-making complex and slow. Strong corporate culture (also a pro) contributes to resistance to change. Work / life balance has improved in recent years but still has a ways to go.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease VP accountability for meeting financial targets. Take decisive action if mobile growth strategy is not working. Invest more in software businesses.

    Software Engineer Review (Grade 5-6)

Software Engineer (Current Employee) Santa Clara, CA (US)

Pros1- Job security is very high. Firing is very low although in 2014 they have done some layoff through an attractive voluntary separation plan.
2- Laid back culture. High degree of freedom in terms of project goals, implementation methodology, working hours (almost nobody ever questions attendance in meetings/work)
3- Excellent cash bonus and stocks for senior employees (Grade 7 above)

Cons1- Base pay is less compared to other employers. Not a top payer.
2- Upper management is slow in decision making, lots of reorganization happens and lots of duplicate efforts for a single area.
3- Slow rate of promotions, career growth.

Advice to Senior ManagementDecision making should be much faster. Products should be released on a faster cadence.
Redundancy within the organization should be reduced.
Employees should be rewarded monetarily for good work and penalized more for sloppiness

Good technologies and people, problematic buereaucracy

Strategic Planner (Former Employee) Santa Clara, CA (US)

    ProsWork-life balance
Opportunity to see/work the spans of technologies
Some of the brightest people in the industry

    ConsMiddle-manager politics
    Slow progress
Lack of risk-taking to break new grounds

Advice to Senior ManagementPromote new ideas & bBe gutsy in making new investments (sometimes end result cannot be fully known)
Bring agility and increased focus on Software & UX (not just lip service)

    Analog Design Engineer

Analog Design Engineer (Former Employee) Santa Clara, CA (US)

ProsGood Work/Life balance, good pay and bonuses, good perks. Care for health of employees by offering free fruits and Gym facility (though a very small one in Santa Clara compared with other sites).

ConsNo room for growth if you don't know how to play politics. No interesting work for analog engineers. No risk taking. Lot of politics and its review system is the worst.

ProsThe best reason to work here are the people. The people are extremely intelligent and work really hard. The other reason why I love working here is you have the opportunity to do anything and everything at Intel. There are always so many things going on internally that you can easily find a good job that fits what you want to do and need.

ConsThe company is huge so it functions like a big city. A lot of processes to get things done- so there is bureaucracy. Sometimes the middle management isn't up to par due to the high demands on the industry.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
