Lowell, AR (US)

Former Employee – worked at J.B. Hunt full-time for more than 7 years

ProsStability, little to no outsourcing of jobs; forward thinking; technology

ConsSalaried personnel work 50+ hours a week; very political enviroment, especially within IT (Applications) management; some higher levels of management very egotistical and condescending which prevents open lines of communication; difficult to concentrate, high stress in some groups (Operations, Brokerage) due to open floor plan, lack of privacy within new workstation design; employee morale extremely poor in some departments.

Advice to Senior ManagementQuestion employees on how they feel about their management; reduce work hours for personnel so they can have more of a work/life balance; show more appreciation to driving force (identify ways to recognize drivers other than miles alone); ensure management treats employees with respect; reduce need for CYA practices.

Current Employee – been working at J.B. Hunt full-time for more than a year

Proslearning experience, work well with school schedules.

Cons7am-5pm work days, not 8/9-5. Micro-managin at it's finest. bottom of the barrel pay.

Advice to Senior ManagementSales and operations need to be better connected. They need to take better care of the employees, they have a lot of smart, hard working employees that don't get any acknowledgment and end up leaving.

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Current Employee – been working at J.B. Hunt

ProsCompensation for things other companies don't or won't pay, flexible scheduling as needed, equipment is well maintained, managers very easy to talk to.

ConsMedical insurance is not the best, co pays are expensive, out sick or injured more than three days you must take a new DOT physical and have personal physician sign a ton of paperwork which is a hassle, point system used against you when you must be out of work unless fleet mgr is notified 24 hrs in advance, if sick he must know beforehand, who plans to be sick?

Advice to Senior ManagementRevamp the aforementioned point system, it'sa major detractor to those who want to stay with the company, improve the mileage pay scale to keep up with the cost of living, .34 a mile to start is a slap in the face to someone with over 20 years driving experience.

ProsCompetent senior management, bonuses are good when the economy is doing well. There is a variety of different schedules to work, so it can be a good place to work if you are in school and needing to work full time.

ConsSub par pay, with no raises to speak of...ever. What you come in at, is what you will most likely leave with. Bonuses. This is a 2 sided coin. Even if you earn a certain bonus percentage, it is doubtful that it will be paid out if it is over the 30% mark. Even if you earn a stellar bonus, do not expect to get that amount.

There is very much an "Us verse Them" with management. The senior management is very arrogant, yet they could not even log onto a phone a take a call. Also, there is absolutely no communication between management and employees. It is very much like a bad marriage. Things will come down the pipeline that are major, and the employees will find out about them the day they are supposed to take place.

The benefits are terrible. They are really focusing on the HDHP where you get to pay the first $2650 to meet your deductible before the insurance even kicks in, so in effect if you sign up for this version of insurance you have already reduced your salary by this much, and if you have kids you know you will be paying it. Also it goes up every year, but your salary doesn't. The 401k is ok, but you have very few investment options to consider.

There is absolutely ZERO chance of advancement, what you get hired into is what you will retire doing and this is at the corporate office. Also, there are 4 divisions, but being able to transfer between them, is next to impossible. Someone on here has already spoken about the "mythical" paybands and this is true. You pretty much never know if the job you are applying for is a lateral move a promotion or somewhere inbetween. There is zero transparency. Also, being qualified for a job in no way guarantees you will even get an interview. They want you in your current position until you retire or leave.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more transparent, and for the love of all that is holy, start communicating better with your employees! Also, if the company earns a certain eps (earnings per share) amount, just pay it, and quit coming up with these lame reasons why you can't.....oh wait that is right...COMMUNICATE with your employees.

Proswell, you get a chance to traval all over the county, and you really don't have to worry about someone looking over your shoulder. And you make good money.

Conssome time you will be away from home for long periods of time. You have to keep a log for everything that you do.

Advice to Senior Managementbasically keep doing what you are doing. You might want to talk to some of the fleet managers on respect to drivers.
