I have been working at Johnson Controls full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Reputation of consistently delivering on customer expectations. Often hear from customers that JCI are great to deal with.

    Cons

Australia business is very conservative and traditionally have taken very little risk in emerging markets, pefer instead to follow trends as opposed to being the market leaders they are well positioned to be. Do not leverage extensive global expertise very well. Geographical structure creates challenges to service large national and multinational customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Business revamp to better suit customer changing needs by adding value and providing solutions to their business challenges. Products focus and transactional mentality needs to change to reposition JCI in the marketplace as a service and solutions provider

    Great company, but very silo'd

I worked at Johnson Controls full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Huge company with great benefits and very friendly and personable coworkers. Company consistently grew year over year and it was exciting to be a part of it.

    Cons

For how big a company it is, JCI operates in silos - that is to say that the different divisions don't talk to one another and it is very hard to transfer into another group. Stress can be high at times during the year, especially around Aug/Sept right before the close of the fiscal year. Variable pay (bonuses) don't start until you are at Sr Manager level, which is a very small % of the employee population...and even then the bonus % aren't very high and seldom get paid out at 100%

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote more across the enterprise - between divisions. There should be a "One JCI" atmosphere instead of a division first attitude.

I worked at Johnson Controls full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

There is online and offsite location training for both technical and non technical. It is improvement compared to when I first started.
There is opportunity to work with people from diverse culture and background.

    Cons

Sometimes you get people who don't know what they are doing but they had the opportunity to be in a leadership position.
Not everyone takes the internal review seriously. They don't even bother to provide feedback until annual review.
There can be high turnover of staff at certain locations and the replacement may not know what happened. They get frustrated and leave. This cause the vicious cycle to repeat itself.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Look objectively at the people that are labelled high potential. Not all of them are at that level.

I have been working at Johnson Controls full-time

    Pros

Great company with unbelievable amount of resources throughout. If you dream it in a building chances are JCI has done it, can do it, will find the people to do it. Customer Satisfaction is JCI's highest priority which is most important.

    Cons

Very hard internally to make any sudden move or changes that are outside normal day to day tasks. Want to make customers happy but sometimes getting our accounting or internals to make those things happen for a customer turn out to be very frustrating and time consuming. Regional management pushes local branches but puts on the breaks for needed resources even if justified.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Regional Management, if a branch needs employees to grow the business let it happen. Its the branches responsibility to execute at a certain plan. If you don't see the need, let the branch make prove you wrong.

I have been working at Johnson Controls full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The great things about JC is it's history, focus on customer and the people who all work together to get things done. Great collaboration and team work across business units, countries and teams.

    Cons

Tend to adopt a 'one size fits all' approach to Employee Benefits when people really would appreciate the opportunity of tailoring their own benefits package to suit their individual circumstances. Legacy IT systems do not interface and business processes tend to be cumbersome. It's getting better though.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ensure key communication messages really do reach down to all levels and don't get stuck with middle management.

Current Employee - Account Executive in Hayward, CA (US)

I have been working at Johnson Controls full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The benefit of working for a F100 company - many resources. Unlimited career opportunities for career growth - many different positions, locations, and business types to choose from. Diversity and integrity are a big focus...good culture.

    Cons

Work/life balance - need a more flexible vacation schedule

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The branch location is not in an optimal location - in industrial area. No access to restaurants, green space. Need to focus on our culture and make it a more fun place to work - via a better location and additional perks at the branch level (things like at our HQ - gym, cafeteria, etc.)
