I worked at Johnstone Supply full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The fact that most employees have remained for well over 10 years speaks volumes as to the working environment. After 30 years of independent business ownership I spent my last 5 working years surrounded by, with few exceptions, dedicated hard working co-workers. Both pay and benefits were above industry standards. The owner repeatedly showed his care and concern for his employees from actions as simple as celebrating everyone's birthday with a cake to insuring the financial well being of individuals in times of need. This company places an enormous emphasis on employee training and education.

    Cons

Because of the multifaceted aspects of this industry there is a steep learning curve in developing the skill sets necessary to become proficient in handling the day to day activities in a leadership role.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to provide key employees with the compensation and benefits commensurate with their dedication and loyalty.

I have been working at Johnstone Supply full-time

    Pros

Family owned, good pay, close knit group. The owner is engaged with the business and employees and takes the time to know employees outside of work.

    Cons

Limited advancement opportunities. If management finds out you are really good in a particular area, they will limit your ability to advance. Cant say that I blame them, but it makes it difficult for those who are eager and have the qualifications both professionally, and academically to advance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep your talent engaged and feeling like there opportunities for advancement or else they will start looking for other opportunities.

I worked at Johnstone Supply full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Other than being employed, there were no pros

    Cons

The store I worked at had a Toxic, negative environment! The owner of the Rochester and Syracuse stores only cared about his pockets and not the employees who were working hard 41+ hours. If there were any positive affirmations, they were: few; far between; and/or back handed!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't let the owner talk to the employees, customers, or sales representatives! He is arrogant and has absolutely no people skills!
