Chaotic politics hinders progress

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Schiphol (Netherlands)

I have been working at Liberty Global

ProsGood opportunities, for competant people, to rise very quickly through the organisation.

Salaries aren't terrible.

A "safe haven" for contract staff, of all levels of ability

ConsMany technically brilliant people in managerial roles. (Which is not within their skill set)

General inexperience with the technology, mostly due to the silo driven mentality, partly due to buying entire solutions from vendors, rather than individual components, and partly due to reliance on contractors - who will of course come and go.

Operations teams fail to take ownership of the platforms.

Architecture teams fail to understand Operational requirements.

Architecture and Product teams fail to work together, to create products that are both desirable & deliverable.

Ridiculous timeline expectations makes projects impossible to deliver, due to clashes in vendor deliveries, and lab activities. (Timelines are dictated to the projects, based on nothing, rather than coming from the projects)

Salary is generally below average for atracting technical expertise to move country.

Advice to Senior ManagementTrain or reallocate leaders who can not provide simple resource planning information.

Let the Project teams tell you the timelines, then look to squeeze by removing scope, rather than starting with a delivery date.

Pay the price to get some good quality, experienced, permanent staff in. (It'll pay itself back in timelines to deliver)

Use the aforementioned skilled staff to mentor new apprentices, carrying the company into the future.

Dynamic company

Senior Network Architect (Current Employee)
Amsterdam (Netherlands)

I have been working at Liberty Global full-time for more than 10 years

ProsAn international organisation, very dynamic, opportunities to grow and learn, pays well, makes efforts to retain staff. Nice work facilities. Growing position in market, unlikely to be out of business any time soon.

ConsSometimes seems a bit conservative. The need for quick decision making leads to some craziness. Politics can be bad but I guess no worse than other companies of a similar size.

Advice to Senior ManagementLess politics please

dinamic, developing, challenging, opportunity , growth

Software Development Manager (Current Employee)
Amsterdam (Netherlands)

I have been working at Liberty Global full-time for more than 5 years

ProsIt is the type of company, big enough to pursue any IT carrier opportunity you would like. Represents the headquarters of european operations. If you are good you will be noticed and compansated.

ConsCould put more accent on people development, but it is a direction which is taken..and steps are done already toawards this goal. This in the light of comparing it with working in the IT consultancy industry which puts a higher focus on this topic.

A nightmare

Manager (Former Employee)
Schiphol (Netherlands)

I worked at Liberty Global full-time for more than a year

ProsA few good people but they don't stay long in the company

Cons- unprofessional work environment (familiarity, everyone dating each other, after party people come to work late etc.)
- mess in every department, no one knows what their role is
- toxic environment, people work long hours, it is very common people shouting at each other, sometimes it even gets physical
- management gives promises and never realizes them
- many people are not qualified to do their job
- many people have been in the company for years and prevent new comers improving the processes
- commute (to far from the train station)
- I can go on and on

Advice to Senior ManagementHire people who actually know technology and how to manage people. Make sure your managers know the company's product! Stop having meetings about meetings! Be responsible and accountable for your work and your team.
