Pros – After they made the decision the hiring process was pretty quick and the people involved were very helpful in getting my documentation prepared.

Cons – Not Applicable. The hiring process was pretty routine.

Pros – The majority of faculty and staff are very committed to the mission and vision of this once great institution which is to provide the best treatment for cancer patients and to develop much better approaches to treat and hopefully cure cancer patients.

Cons – The new leadership is arrogant, nepotistic, ruthless and driven by their own personal agendas. Their behavior has embarrassed the faculty and staff in a very public way. They have set of a two tier system, where the new hires for the "Institute" developed by new leadership are paid 2-3 times what faculty and staff are while not being held to the same performance standards. Faculty morale is at an all time low, with >50% of faculty stating that they will leave within the next 3-5 years. The leadership style has been very destructive and has resulted in faculty fleeing from this once great institution on a weekly basis. There have been multiple demotions and firings of faculty and staff who do not do the bidding of the new leadership. The national press is now calling for a downgrading of the #1 rating of MD Anderson in Cancer Care by the US News and World Report. Although once this happens -and it will happen- the leadership will be called to account for this actions, it will be much too late to recover from the multiple programs that have been destroyed. We have become a laughingstock nationally, with a recognition that the grand "Moonshot Program" is nothing more than a fund raising ploy to provide money to supper the senior leadership research programs in this era of low grant funds and sequestrations.

Pros – Great teamwork with other nurses on the floor.

Cons – Heavy patient load with high patient:nurse ratios

Cons – pays not as high as industry

Pros – Staff is helpful and friendly. Many opportunities for career advancement due to the size of institution and diversity of jobs.

Cons – Very hard to get a permanent position with MDACC by just applying online. I suggest getting a contract position with a temp agency. MDACC has alot of contract employees. Many contract employees are ultimately offered permanent positions.

Advice to Senior Management – The process of hiring employees needs to be quicker. It takes too long to get feedback on applications.

Pros – Working with the best of the best in oncology research; approachable faculty; co-workers from every area of the world; competitive salaries, beautiful surroundings (buildings/furniture), top-notch equipment.

Cons – Recent change in leadership (president) who is reworking how things have been done. Wants to commercialize. Lots of changes from the top-down. Not everyone is happy with the changes. Also brought some bad press which dedicated employees are having a hard time getting over. Also since a state agency it is difficult to fire low-achievers and high achievers are overburdened.

Advice to Senior Management – Recognize the efforts of the dedicated, long-term employees; look at experience more than letters after someone's name. Rate work ethic higher than the degree that someone has.
