    Pros

Coworkers made the job enjoyable. Good work life balance. Lenient and supportive policies for writing actuarial exams (days off, increase in pay, etc.)

    Cons

Some employees, like in all workplaces, were challenging to work with. High amount of bureaucracy. Departments can often feel siloed.

Great place to work at and grow as a professional

I have been working at Manulife Financial

    Pros

People are helpful, study days for ADP members, great atmosphere of aspiring young actuaries, location is convenient too. Also throughout the year there are events to lighten up the mood and raise morale, within teams or company wide.

    Cons

Some times meeting the deadlines could be stressful especially having to study for actsc exams after work and on the weekend.

I worked at Manulife Financial full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

A well known Canadian organization, it offers a lot internal opportunities. Really liked the student program for employees who pursue professional designations such as CPA and Acturary.

    Cons

The corporate hierarchy is too tall, it tends to compromise the efficiency. Expected to work hard with moderate compensation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Strip some layers within the organization, and reward employee efforts directly to the individuals

I worked at Manulife Financial for more than 10 years

    Pros

    Decent benefits and stock options.

    Cons

If you want to do the right thing this is not the place to work. Once the company went public it was all about the bottom dollar. Employees became just a number.

I have been working at Manulife Financial full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The Actuarial Development Program has a upon-passing-exam salary increment which exceeds any other company in Indonesia due to its % growth.

    Cons

The career ladder is long with so many ranks/levels to climb on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please provide clearer goals and requirements to climb up to the top level, at least up to management level. Please create a system that can objectively evaluate employees' performance and stir away from a single supervisor subjective judgement.

I worked at Manulife Financial full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

You will work with very friendly and talented people here. Office culture (before VP level) is more family/college style.

    Cons

Less work/life balance for junior level. Promotion chances are rather rare. And the salary level is not satisfying.

  10.

I worked at Manulife Financial full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Experience, Top FI and Insurance companies, Global exposure, structure and leadership training,.

    Cons

Bad culture, and out of touch with reality

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on newer technology rather than old school hustling of high net worth clientele. Money spent on your "agents" who sit around doing nothing can be better spent on newer tech and social marketing. Move away from the stone age.

    Dysfunctional work environment

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

I worked at Manulife Financial full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Pays well as do most FIs

    Cons

Dysfunctional environment. Non-effective, micro-managing, inexperienced leaders who focus on the "weeds" rather than operating strategically. Too many middle managers operating at levels below their job descriptions. Employees have almost no autonomy as inexperienced managers do not feel comfortable with delegation.

A lot of overtime with little work/life balance. There is a "workplace transformation" initiative to get people to work from home. However, most managers are opposed to it and while they pay lip service to the concept (for the benefit of senior management), they stonewall any real effort to make this initiative work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Flatten the organization by removing middle managers focused on the "weeds". Empower people and let them prove themselves - give them autonomy to do their jobs well.
