Not so good experience

Systems Analyst (Current Employee)
Bethesda, MD (US)

I have been working at Marriott full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGood vacation, usually 5 weeks now it is reduced to 3 weeks for new employees

ConsBad management, Upper level is mostly outdated people who have been in the company for 20-25 people. They don't have knowledge about project management or anything.
Company says takecare as their slogan but it is opposite of that.
Compensation wise they don't care about employees below senior systems analyst level thats why they don't have bonuses
Bonuses only for upper management
Very cunning incentives like 401K match is made only after september of next year for current year.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

marriott in china

Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Marriott full-time for more than 3 years

Prosopportunities to grow within or be transferred is relatively high as new properties are mushrooming every other month

Consyou get a young management above you with middle-light-weight experience who don't have the expertise to develop others

Advice to Senior Managementretain or hire top quality people instead of promoting juniors so quickly just to meet localisation goals. you'll lose good people who are currently working with you

Safe job but no future

Reservation Sales Agent (Current Employee)
Warsaw (Poland)

I have been working at Marriott full-time for more than 3 years

ProsJob safety, good relations with co-employees, well designed working tools. Well known brand name and multilingual environment.

ConsPoor salary, no promotion possibility. Top management detached from real life of a hourly working staff which returns very poor salary, absolutely no bonus (year or occasional). No possibilities to improve skills needed to be a better employee.

Advice to Senior ManagementBetter salary, so people can afford to live a decent life.

Drama

Housekeeper (Former Employee)
Burnsville, MN (US)

I worked at Marriott full-time for less than a year

ProsYou can take a lot of breaks as a housekeeper, and are pretty much left to your own devices

ConsAlways start at 9am, work until all rooms on your board are clean (12 or so) half hour maximum per room. Rooms are filthy and you clean a lot of nasty stuff. Tips a sparse, and at the place I worked, there was an absurd amount of drama. If you are sick you must call 4 hours before your scheduled shift and find your own replacement. (no one wakes up at 5am to see if they are sick! and no one will come in for housekeeping on their day off)

Advice to Senior Managementhire more housekeepers so that the amount of rooms cleaned per day is manageable, and have a better system for calling in sick.

They are a great company to work for.

Director of Sales and Marketing (Former Employee)
London, England (UK)

I worked at Marriott full-time for more than 7 years

ProsThey look after you, and are very fair. I worked there, left and went back again. They're a true team orientated company who expect results.

ConsYou do need to play the "marriott corporate" game, and "fit in". If you don't, you won't last long. The culture is that of working together and making it happen which is good, so if you're not a team player, personable and make an effort, you won't survive.

Advice to Senior ManagementWork the system.

Do the reports accordingly and on time and you'll do fine!

Proud to work for Marriott

Sales Coordinator (Former Employee)
Orlando, FL (US)

I worked at Marriott full-time for more than 10 years

ProsI Loved working for this company. I was sad to see my position eliminated due to corporate reorganization in June of 2011.

ConsCorporate restructuring led me to lose my position after 15 years with the company. It was sad and unfortunate to have to start over elsewhere after 15 years.

Great Company, strong leadership, leader in hospitality industry.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Bethesda, MD (US)

I worked at Marriott full-time for more than 8 years

ProsMarriot is an excellant company to work that really embraces two mantras: "Success is never final," and "If you take care of your employees, then they'll take care of the guests'.

ConsMarriott is a hotel management company and has to compete to win management contracts of various ownership groups. The benefits package offered to Marriott employees has been scaled back to be more competitive attracting hotel contracts.

Good company, fair pay

Reservations Sales Home Agent (Former Employee)
Omaha, NE (US)

I worked at Marriott full-time for more than 8 years

ProsGood work environment; chance to work from home; many benefits including hotel discounts. You don't have bosses breathing down your back, and it is easy to get a good schedule with good performance and some seniority.

ConsThe pay is not enough to support a household. They want you to work overtime when you least want to work (summer, holidays, etc.). They encourage you to take time off when you need to work the most. You must maintain 92 percent of your work time on the phones, and your breaks must adhere to strict schedules.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet rid of the "Guaranteed Fair Treatment" policy and cut some slack to long-term employees with great service records.. The GTF policy treats good and bad workers equally.

Easy to work with

Bellman (Current Employee)
Baton Rouge, LA (US)

I have been working at Marriott part-time for more than a year

ProsI'm a full time student, and during down time when there aren't any guests arriving, I was able to study, do homework, and other things so that I didn't have to worry about it when I get off of work.

ConsNot really a con, but they have long shifts, typically 7 AM to 3 PM and 3 PM to 11 PM straight. Home football games aren't fun either, usually having 200+ arrivals on a single night.
