    Pros

    I really enjoyed my department. The recreation team was so much fun sometimes it didn't even feel like work. My manager and supervisor were fantastic.

    Cons

    They make you pay for the staff cafeteria whether or not you have religious beliefs that keep you from eating or allergies. The food they feed you is repulsive and poorly maintained. Maggots in the pop machine is just unacceptable. The core values of the company are great but need to be executed better. Executive leadership seems to think they are an elite group and do not seem to care to much about staff. During the slow season your full time employment get cut to part time which makes it hard to live in Muskoka.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Marriott needs to do an overhaul of the JW Marriott the Rosseau Muskoka. Pay more attention to what your employees have to say about things. Also focus more time on improving the hotel then spending money to expand it. It is a JW after all.

    Pros

    Great location, people were friendly and the clientele are super easy to accommodate, business casual and a few groups.

    Cons

    Awful attitudes from employees. Management was lazy and invisible. There to take credit and quick to point the finger or throw you under the bus.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Needs a new GM badly and the sales department is an utter joke of incoherency. Most of the work falls on the front desk which is also poorly managed. Don't play favoritism. This hotel could be run much much more efficiently with a few changes.

    Pros

    The hotel discounts were nice.

    Cons

    It's a typical call center. Pay is capped out at $11. It's hard to see some Middle Aged co-workers cap out at that, especially when they've been working there 8+ years!

    Yeah, the discount is nice but if you don't have the PTO to take off and if you're making $10 otherwise, how can you afford trips as much as you'd like? It's not worth it.

    Pros

    The only good thing about this job was that it was near my home. The commute was easy.

    Cons

    The computer software used is still from the 80's.. The transactions and reports can be done in a fraction of the time if they'd just upgrade the software to what it should be. I mean it's 2014 now!

    Great people to work with, flexible when it comes to family-related issues, benefits are great

    Cons

    Wish they didn't start cutting back on paid time off. It used to be 20 days your first year then they cut it back to 10 days. Don't be stingy on overtime or at least be specific about using overtime as compensated time (free PTO). Getting promoted is hard and so is trying to get into different departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Bring back bonuses, not just for directors, VPs, and up. I think your employees deserve bonuses as hard as they work to make this company look good.

    Pros

    Good company with solid reputation as a business and an employer. Interesting and different job opportunities are available if you carefully build your network.

    Cons

    At HQ, the spread of work is not even close to even. Diligent employees carry the dead weight of people who have long ago outlived their value. Marriott lifers love hotels more than they love being home and they expect the same of their associates. Be prepared for long hours and low pay relative to the amount and intensity of the work. If you're a parent, do your homework so you're not surprised by the skimpy leave benefits.

    Benefits including medical, dental, disability, profit sharing, vacation time, some departments offer telecommute and flextime, daycare for a fee, exercise club for a fee, cafeteria, gift shop, post office. Associate rate for hotel rooms with good discounts. Competitive pay. Formalized HR and associate review policies. Big company so many opportunities in different departments. Respected company in the area. If you are a person who is type A competitive and enjoy big company politics then this is the place for you...

    Cons

    Although they claim, the company culture is still the same "we take care of the associates so that they take care of the guests" the company culture has changed signifigantly to be direct profit driven. They no longer value expertise in the hotels or the hospitality industry and go out of their way to outsource and/or hire people outside of the hospitality industry. This has resulted in not accomplishing objectives because the right people are not in the right jobs and therefore it takes more time, money to get anything done and in the end although they think they saved money but outsourcing they actually increase cost because of the lack of expertise and inefficiences. Customer service is suffering as a result. Departments are very sioled and each VP is more concerned with covering mistakes vs learning from them, and competitive to the point of heeding progress. Therefore switching departments and job growth is very difficult because of this competitive and siloed environment. Associates are expected to work long hours to reach unrealistic deadlines with inappropriate staffing and is very stressful environment . Workload varies greatly between departments. What was once a culture of collaboration and a work family is now one of competitiveness and backstabbing. I long for the days of the old Marriott ...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Marriott International is a different company now, so instead of saying that has maintained the same culture and philosphy be open and honest about what Arne Sorenson's real philosphy is because it certainly is not what it use to be. Should value expertise of individuals with hospitality experience and education vs throwing them out the door and replacing them with people with no experience in the industry. Need to invest in research and development so that we stay ahead of the competition and implement innovation ahead of our competitors vs always playing catch up.
