Low morale, office politics, and uncertain leadership left this otherwise fine ship in less than tip top shape.

    Pros

Genuinely nice staff (with less than a handful of notable exceptions), flexible scheduling, approachable management.

    Cons

Insecure leadership, 'revolving door' staffing, poor decision making.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be firm but fair, decision by committee rarely gets things done correctly (especially if it involves something as fundamental as scheduling), and please, those little factoids about the employees posted everywhere are kinda lame.

  2.

Current Employee - Housekeeper in Akron, OH (US)

    Pros

The people I work with are cool.

    Cons

It is very hard work, sometimes cleaning 20-25 rooms with no break or sitting down because you have to get done in a certain amount of time. A lot of times there aren't enough linens to go around so it's hard to get rooms finished.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more housekeepers, buy more linens, make managers get in there and clean rooms when short staffed.

Former Employee - Front Desk Associate in Teaneck, NJ (US)

    Pros

Great people, faced paced work environment. Great foundation to gain experience for a career in the industry.

    Cons

Some GMs don't abide by open door policy. A lot of politics and favoritism.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve the disconnect between upper management/corporate office and hourly employees. Stop insisting to cut costs and cheapen product while expecting the guest experience to improve. Our guests are not stupid. They can tell if corners are cut.

Former Employee - Concierge Lounge Host in San Francisco, CA (US)

    Pros

Great 'ideals' from Mr. Marriott and Arne. Great training and personal growth with the training tools like Rosetta Stone.

    Cons

No way to advance unless you are 'liked' by a manager who does the hiring. I had applied for many chances to 'move up' but was always given the 'You don't have leadership experience." I can't move up without it, so why not give me the chance to shine? Sadly I had to leave Marriott to get this chance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give people a chance, just like Mr. Marriott was given when he founded the company.

    Pros

Friendly co-workers, easy to fit in

    Cons

Not much learning when it comes to interns

  10.

Good people, stable company, satisfying work, poor pay.

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

Working with people with good work ethic towards common goals makes up for some of the difficult customer issues that are part of the hospitality business.

    Cons

The bottom line surpassed the founding Mr. Marriott's emphasis of putting people first. There is little feeling of loyalty towards the employees but the company still expects loyalty from tbe employees. If thr paid better they would earn my loyalty better. They did away with merit increases and salary caps are very low so earning potential is non existent unless you skip from job to job and location to location.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put your money where your mouth is and pay for good work.

    Pros

They are very friendly and try to make you feel at home.

    Cons

The hours aren't that great and the pay isn't very good.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If the pay was better more people would be willing to work harder.
