San Francisco, CA (US)

Former Employee – worked at Marsh & McLennan Companies full-time for more than 7 years

Pros- Many smart, knowledgeable, professionals
- A fairly uniform world-wide brand
- Broad spectrum of resources
- A good place for young people to gain experience and responsibility
- Decent wages and benefits for the middle rank-and-file
- Very good compensation plans for senior and executive management
- The Risk Management division (multi-nationals) traditionally had low turnover and excellent technical people
- Extended benefits to Domestic Partners

Cons- Very bloated, centralized management structure in New York HQ
- Executive management's response to Spitzer's legal action in 2004 took 3 tumultuous years to stabilize and when the smoke cleared, a flattish, flexible decentralized organization had morphed into a rigid, authoritarian and increasingly out-of-step and out-of-touch management team.
- Constant changing of technology platforms - most very, very bad - clunky and cumbersome.
- 10s of millions of dollars spent on bespoke technology platforms - abandoned after a year or 2 - which really looks bad when you cyclically lay off hundreds of skilled workers.
- Too many Managing Directors shuffling papers
- Moving toward cheap, disposable workers
- Middle Market business model can't compete with local and Regional
- No longer stand out as knowledge leaders

Advice to Senior Management- Build a culture that values expert knowledge again. In fact, build a culture - yes, with real values; honesty, transparency - then walk the talk
- Sell your Middle Market business - you're burning out your people in a doomed effort to compete with more flexible companies who focus solely on that sector. They do it better than you.
- Focus on Risk Management
- Send half your MDs out to pasture
- Stop selling on price
- Get rid of the commission structure - it provides the wrong incentives; selling cheap price and taking too long in the marketing cycle to do so thereby driving down profit - double whammy.

Former Employee – worked at Marsh & McLennan Companies full-time for more than 3 years

ProsThe client were the best part of Marsh.

ConsManagement consistently has there hands tied in red tape. Encouraged us to treat our clients how the company thought they should be treated rather than treating the clients how they wanted to treat them.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement needs to spend more time training themselves on client needs. Rather than running the business based strictly by the numbers.
