I worked at MasterCard full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The work was challenging; I was never bored. The on-site facilities (fitness center, cafeteria, company store) are new and well maintained. The 401(k) plan is 100% matched up to 6% of the employee salary: that's unheard of! The recent annual bonus and profit sharing amounts have been generous.

    Cons

Never got a chance to be proactive. The project was based on 2 third-party software applications that were over-customized to perform tasks it was never originally intended to perform. The original installation was held together with Unix shell scripts and manual efforts assigned to the off-shore development team. Further enhancements continue to strain these delicately-balanced fixes. Immediate project management only got involved during a system incident (which occurred nearly monthly); otherwise, they were nowhere to be seen or heard from. Promotions did not appear to be merit-based, but whether you were a part of the good old boy network. Newer cubicles are now smaller: in my area, an aisle of 15 cubicles were resized to 19 cubicles.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper level managers are very intelligent and have well defined goals. Unfortunately, the lower level managers have no idea how to implement these goals within their fiefdoms. They continue to rule with their heads in the sand until someone comes along and kicks them in their butt or they are forced to leave.

I worked at MasterCard full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Before they went public they were a very good company - they cared about the employees and their core systems to support the business.

People were very hard working. Pay and benefits were great.

    Cons

Employees who remain technical over 50 years old are generally treated poorly and have few opportunities for continued professional development.. One manger told me "if they were smart they'd get into management so they get what they deserve".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change your focus back to creating and maintaining high quality software systems. Fairly treat employees, particularly the long term employees that still have technical expertise in the systems.

    - Too bureaucratic
    - No incentive to the "new", out of box ideas doesn't have real chances to be implemented.
    - Politics, politics, politics.
    - Where's "Priceless" internally?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Caution - employees are not motivated and don't see recognition.

I have been working at MasterCard full-time

    Pros

The company pays better than market to their employees. The time off policy is very generous. The O
Fallon building has many perks for the employee.

    Cons

The culture and the actual environment are totally different. MasterCard HR tries to promote work/life balance. Putting the employees first. The actuality is long hours, overworked staff, and a hostile work environment. Management is worried about covering themselves and showing up others so they look good with no regard to the result of the dept. or other employees trying to do their best.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Review the business leader and above in the GBSC transaction services and replace with competent leadership.

I have been working at MasterCard full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

What you learn is only limited by your drive to learn. Flexible schedules are a perk. Benefits are competitive. Strong technology focus on the core network enables value added products to be developed.

    Cons

Bureaucracy in middle management inhibits productivity. Need to create better alignment to vision communicated by executive leadership. Software Development culture not quite state of the art - no vision in procuring the right tools to do the job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire better talent and create an environment where they succeed. Stop the cover your ass culture.

I have been working at MasterCard full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Profitable and growing market. International career opportunities.

    Cons

Confusing Structure and too many levels both horizontal and vertical. Matrix organization creates a chaos on how do determine priorities. Compensation is a one-to-one basis. There are people at the same level/job which more than 200% difference in their salaries. Human Resources launched a hunt season against long-term employees in Brazil

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In Brazil, they just fired 7 people out of 150 employees and all of them , ALL, were more than 10 years employees. Guess what it is the mood of those who are 8 or 9 years old. The local leadership team has completely destroyed its credibility and people are working all worried about losing their jobs. What is crazy in this ? Company results are awesome. So, what's the message here ? Stay old in the company and be kicked out ?
