I have been working at NRG Energy

    Pros

NRG is a mission driven company with a friendly culture and humble, hard-working people.

    Cons

The new corporate structure results in some silos thus making it hard to know what is going on in other parts of the company. Also, despite the size of the company, - 10,000 employees, there are too few people making decisions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate, communicate, communicate. Consider the value of being a proactive vs. a reactive leader. If you're always asking for work product with tight deadlines and terse explanations you will frustrate people and prevent them from thinking for themselves. If you want to empower people you have to slow down and discuss with them how they can make a difference at the company. Allow them to see their role in the bigger picture of the company's progress.

I have been working at NRG Energy full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

A forward thinking company with true vision for the future. Operationally, continuing to make profits for shareholders through traditional generation while stretching to develop the future of the energy industry.

Management is flexible as long as individuals can deliver results through (heavy) workload.

Competitive compensation and benefits mitigates turnover that would otherwise result from high workload.

    Cons

Functional areas are run lean which leads to excessive workload.

Former Contractor - Project Controls Manager in Los Angeles, CA (US)

I worked at NRG Energy as a contractor (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Large Scale & Large Scope, Long term projects, huge technical and professional skills, client side benefits

    Cons

reluctant to hire on FT salaried project staff, therefore, project personnel are mostly working on contract without benefits, 401k, paid vacation etc

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

consider taking the top talent on as FT staff with all the benefits, then you would be paying a 100% markup on the field services staffing and project professionals.

I have been working at NRG Energy full-time

    Pros

Great pay, satisfactory commute, friendly co-workers, advancement opportunities, union based employment, minimal outdoor working environment, fast growing parent company, multiple employee discount perks, knowledgeable staff

    Cons

Toxic relationship between operations and management, micro management at it's best, minimal flexibility, feels like "at will" employment although it's union based

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be willing to compromise, practice flexibility and accountability, trust the employees you hire to do the job they're paid to do
