Current Employee – been working at Neiman Marcus full-time for more than a year
Pros – Great employee discount. Hours for coordinator really good.
Cons – Need to stay at 37.5 hours per week. No career path and growth at store level.

Former Employee – worked at Neiman Marcus full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – In control of how you want to run your business (for the most part, aside from micromanagement), it is nice to see the newest items/trends, contests to win NM money and/or product and I found it very satisfying to build trusting, long-term relationships with clients/some co-workers and some vendors.
Cons – The dept managers are under a huge amount of pressure from the merchandise managers, they are super stressed by the store managers and they are stressed by corporate. Some of the managers are really great...Others treat you like you are 10 years old. Even when some of the sales associates are twice their age.
Advice to Senior Management – Please try to create a trusting environment in the department.

Former Employee – worked at Neiman Marcus part-time for more than a year
Pros – Huge discounts - which makes you spend your hard earned money back to them.
Discounts at their restaurant.
No late working hours.
Some staff are nice and friendly.
Cons – Snobby staff. Snotty customers
Competitive when it comes to selling in your department. Every customer belongs to someone else so you're not allowed to make a sale.
Due to competitiveness, co-workers get jealous often. Make a big sale and expect the others to notice it. They're not giving you a compliment on the good job you did, they are envious and wish it was them instead of you.
It's boring. Most hours go by without any customer coming in.
Don't expect to go anywhere, once you're a sales associate, you're going to be stuck here.
Customers returning what they bought because of NM's crazy return policy.
Advice to Senior Management – I don't know where you go, but, stay on the floor long enough to see that those long-time employees of yours aren't the best employees you've got. They are the ones who gets jealous and disappears during their shifts. They are the ones who take extremely long breaks. Recognize your employees for the work they have done and not how long they have stayed with the company.

Current Employee – been working at Neiman Marcus full-time for less than a year
Pros – There is a sense of togetherness. Everyone wants to help each other to be successful. There are opportunities to move up after 6 months of employment.
Cons – We were hired as full time associates. Because business has been slow our paychecks have been 55-60 hours instead of 80!!! Don't our bills and families matter? It does not feel good to be able to earn full time hours when it is convenient for the company.
Advice to Senior Management – Allow us to earn the hours we were hired for. Morale is not very good among workers. We have went through a tedious training process to be hired full time......now we're not being given those hours. Making so little hours I cannot afford insurance!!

Current Employee – been working at Neiman Marcus part-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Neiman Marcus is a great place to work. One will definitely learn something new each day. The key to success is overcoming obstacles in a professional manner. Your customer is priority number one.It is your job to make them feel that intent on your part.
Cons – The working environment can be a challenge at times due to the way the selling style has changed. Your job is to stay focused on the task at hand and do not forget to follow through with each and every customer you assist.
Advice to Senior Management – Don't expect your employees to do anything that you yourself would not do.

Current Employee – been working at Neiman Marcus full-time for more than a year
Pros – Pros – It is very easy to communicate with team members and management. Everyone is very friendly and willing to help each other out to get the task at hand done. Work with happy people with nice smiling faces.
Discounts are great. Free iphone.
Cons – Cons – upper-middle management is very focused on numbers. Too many associates not enough customers.Could be very boring at times if you are someone who likes a more fast paced place of work. No room to advance. Our manager expects us to be willing to work 24/7 and also frequently tells us that we are all "disposable" and "replaceable". Talk about motivation to show up.
Advice to Senior Management – Please appreciate your team.. Listen, contemplate and revise, sometimes there is another way. Don't treat your employees like they are five years old, give them real, constructive criticism to help build and groom each person - not make us feel as though we are 5 years old.

Former Employee – worked at Neiman Marcus full-time for more than a year
Pros – Good benefits and work/life balance.
Cons – Lack of leadership: upper management/executives are not concerned about developing, motivating, empowering and valuing their mid-level management (in my division, even the associates' bonus were higher than the mid-management). If you are innovative, committed and want to work for a company that cares, run from Neiman Marcus - they do not value employees and do not give you chance to grown - their "executive development program accepts 70 % of external candidates and only 30% of internal ones...blame it on "diversity"!
If you are a thinker and challenge initiatives or decisions, NM is not the company for you either - as they cannot lead, they prefer people that can execute without questioning anything.
If you are in retail and have the dream to work for Neiman Marcus (as many of us do...), consider it twice - it is likely to become a nightmare.
Advice to Senior Management – You might want to review how your upper management/executives lead people - business is not only about numbers...without people you fail big.
You might want to question why change is so difficult in this company - or might want to challenge they 25+ years working for Neiman Marcus type of manager/executive that cannot understand the changes, the times or the new market needs and won't let innovation get to this old minded-obsolete company.
You might want to listen to employees that are committed and there to make a difference, that are questioning your practices and policies. You might want to look a little deeper into different divisions of this company and understand that all of them are equally important and should be valued.
Without that, in the first opportunity, your good employees will leave you for your competition. Good luck!

Former Employee – worked at Neiman Marcus full-time for more than a year
Pros – Management is very budget conscious; therefore, you never have to work overtime. Once in a while you get a great discount on merchandise.
Cons – Neiman's presents itself as a financially successful company. Truth is, I have never worked for a company as cheap as them. You get the feeling that any second the whole company will collapse.
