Excellent company for entry level sales and starting your career.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Neogen

ProsNeogen is a strong company with continued annual growth. This environment provides job stability and opportunities for sales and technical training.

ConsSalaries are meager across the board. Imperative you negotiate up front as all future negotiations are based on your initial compensation benchmark. Salary does not grow at same rate of budget expectations.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to and implement Intel provided by your employees.

Decent Place to Start

Tech Service (Current Employee)
Lansing, MI (US)

I have been working at Neogen full-time

Pros-The coworkers are, for the most part, all very genuine people.
-It's an entry level opportunity to develop your skills so that you can move on at a later time.

Cons-Compensation and benefits are poor.
-Focus is on investor value, not employee development.
-Very hard to move up, or around within the company.
-Many individuals on sales team are inept.
-Management does very little to motivate employees, no incentives for good performance.
-Many labs are understaffed, but the company would rather do more with less than hire a few more people, thus helping their bottom line.
-Nothing ever changes, implementation takes too long.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou have some great people at your company, show them you actually care about them. Focus on employee development/more competitive compensation packages, and your bottom line will improve even more.

Entry level company, not a career destination

Chemist (Former Employee)
Lansing, MI (US)

I worked at Neogen

ProsThis is a good entry level place to get into quickly and punch out one year of GMP/ISO manufacturing if you're straight out of school.

ConsLittle room for job advancement, very little actual innovation going on as opposed to expanding the applications of existing technologies, and the salaries are absolutely dismal. Normally industry is supposed to be less interesting but higher paying than academia, but in this case quite a few Michigan State graduate students probably get a higher stipend than their industry counterparts. The scientific literacy of most employees is questionable at best.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop worrying about turnover. Despite the intimidating descriptions and lingo, the job tasks are easy enough for most community college students to do, so just accept that you can have a steady stream of people grabbing their entry level experience and stop acting mystified by the high turnover.

STAY AWAY!

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Neogen

ProsMost of the employees are nice and easy to get along with
Company makes solid revenue
Can easily get in and promoted if you know upper management

ConsNo flexible time
4 separate buildings scattered over the city
Slow to make any decisions
Upper management is a joke and treats employees like children
Pay is downright horrible and disrespectful
Everyone is crammed into extremely disorganized cubes
Only thing they care about is the shareholders and not the employees
The current IT the company uses is beyond outdated

Fair Pay for a 40 hr wk. But as management you are consistently expected to run understaffed and have no home life.

Accounting Manager (Current Employee)
Lansing, MI (US)

I have been working at Neogen

ProsInteresting people to work with, lots of opportunities to increase your knowledge base, skill set and experience if you are willing/ able to put in tons of extra hours, senior management is reasonable and respectful of employees and really have a genuine desire to have a stable, debt free company that will not lay off employees. Senior Management, the Board of Directors and Officers of the company make considerably less money than they would at other companies of the similar size. Neogen also spends a good chuck of change every year on a very nice Christmas party, summer picnic and other events for employees and their families.

ConsSenior management, while reasonable most of the time has a hardline stance on requiring departments to run understaffed in order to save money. A large number of employees company wide have a challenging time working so many hours and covering vacations, etc. When you look at the total compensation pkg vs. hours you work I think it comes in pretty low. They also do not allow comp time for salaried employees and there is no allowance for flex time for any employee. It is common for un or underqualified people to obtain positions because they are friends or neighbors of the senior management team, but I suppose that occurs in most work places. Neogen has a higher turnover than other companies of it's size and the primary reason is salary and work life balance. It is a great place to expand your skills, learn and grow and then move on to a better opportunity.

Advice to Senior ManagementMany of your best and brightest leave because they feel unappreciated and undervalued in total compensation vs. hours worked. Please consider revising flex/comp/pto plans and salary structure.

This place is a nightmare.

Territory Manager (Former Employee)
Lexington, KY (US)

I worked at Neogen

ProsGood products, attend great trade shows.

ConsManagement is a joke. All that goes on in that company is everyone trying to blame everyone else for work that hasn't been done. Pay is horrible unless you are from Marion County.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to communicate better. There is no communication in that building. Also, check out your managers and try to figure out what they are actually doing.
