I have been working at News Corp

ProsThe starting pay / benefits is better than the industry average.

ConsQuality and creativity continue to be sacrificed to the automation gods with no consideration beyond cost-saving.

Advice to Senior ManagementFrom top to bottom, your employees have made you successful. Automation/Outsourcing will never replace the experience and talent you're loosing.

A good company, but one that often moves very slowly and/or flip-flops in a fast-paced industry.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at News Corp

ProsVery good benefits, insurance, travel, corporate discounts and associated perks. Being able to interact with other business divisions within News Corp with expertise in their related fields. Competitive compensation. Global reach, with media outlets in most major countries and strong political "pull" in a few. Some "gem" managers that have found their niche and run great, small, efficient teams that do some great work.

ConsThere are some very mediocre mid-level employees that have been with the company for a long time and never contribute much, or have stopped "keeping up" with technology 5-10 years ago (IT related). Unnecessary outsourcing and over management sometimes complicates communication and project efficiency.

Advice to Senior ManagementAlthough they may be long term employees, there are some middle-management and other workers that drag things down. Be more a-political in your other ventures, not every business unit needs the Fox-News style approach. Be more agile, respect things like net neutrality, social networking, open source software and open content.

Needs to be provide opportunities for talent to shine

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at News Corp

ProsAbility to work on a variety of different things. Brand name company with growth potential. Working there impresses your friends--especially if they are conservatives. Colleagues are nice and try to be helpful. Lack of back-stabbing. Often can feel like a cozy family business.

ConsOrganization does not share information across different companies. Functions are very bureaucratic. Organization is a bit short -sighted. Management does not convey that they value higher education. It's a bit of a boys club. There is not a lot of communication from the executives suites. You often find out what is going on at News Corp from someone outside the organization. A media organization should be able to communicate to its own employees. Sometimes when you come to work, you feel like you are entering a black hole--one in which you have to figure everything out yourself. Physical offices are a bit sparse. Face time seems to be valued even if you can be productive working remotely. There is lot a lot of professional, mature support staff.

Advice to Senior ManagementCreate an executive training program. Locate real talent in the company and support initiatives Create a new energy. Communicate more to employees about what is going on. Create promotional and lateral move opportunities across all subsidiaries. Foster a common corporate culture and a spirit of cooperation amongst different companies. Hire a top management consultanting firm to fix the cultural issues. Allow people to work remotely. Be more modern!

They just get it

ProsThey just get it - from strategy to culture. Of course there are variations from division to division, but in general, I've never seen people who weren't doing a good job advance -- not for long, at least.

ConsAs all companies as they grow, it's getting more political with time.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop buying newspapers. Fix Star TV.
