Former Employee – worked at Nexen as an intern for less than a year
Pros – - the people: though there is a recognized management system, everyone is treated equally
- company safety policy: 12 rules that are followed very strictly!
- exposure: being at the Long Lake SAGD & Upgrader facility allowed me to witness the process first-hand. It is a completely different learning experience as compared to looking at a textbook or computer screen
- the facility had it's first major turnaround begin in Aug 2012: this allowed me to get up close to vessels and machines and learn much more about the way things work
Cons – - this could be viewed as a pro too, but there was quite a bit of change in the company in my short time there. The CEO got fired the morning of my first day of work (Jan 2012), my own boos got fired 3 months after that, and the company was bought out by CNOOC in Aug 2012.
Advice to Senior Management – - to continue to put safety and people ahead of production, as this will ultimately lead to better production and profits
Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Former Employee – worked at Nexen full-time for more than 3 years
Pros – Good Group of People, which are very welcoming and friendly. The new Chinese company that is taking over hopefully improve the way the place is run.
The benefits and bonuses offered are one of the ways to forget about the problems.
Cons – Many individuals are in positions they are unqualified for and because of that work processes/ procedures are horrible.
Advice to Senior Management – Get fly in/ fly out, you may be able to get qualified people on site that way.
Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend

Former Employee – worked at Nexen full-time for more than a year
Pros – They have many of the right programs in place.
The people hired are top in their fields.
Great team members.
Good compensation, average benefits in comparison to large producers
Cons – Management does not always support or backup their employees.
Management rarely follows through on Ethics complaints although they have a great program in writing.
There are few balance and checks in most of their programs, so allows leaders to run their own "companies"
Do not do work load manage, so no work/life balance and excessive overtime involved, no reward but is an expectation.
Advice to Senior Management – Make every manager accountable to their employees and the corporate programs.

Former Employee – worked at Nexen as an intern
Pros – - Very intelligent and helpful people to work with
- Freedom to pursue projects as you like (depending on your manager of course)
- Fantastic culture
- Great work/life balance
Cons – - Very disorganized operation (difficult to get the info you need, backtracking, etc.)
- Unstructured student work term
- Super high turnover (so loss of expertise was common)
Advice to Senior Management – More strategic alignment between business areas will make for a smoother operation. Define your objectives clearly and specifically, and be sure that these are communicated through the corporate ladder.

Current Employee – been working at Nexen full-time for more than 7 years
Pros – Great benefits, decent base pay
Good career advancement opportunities
Great at giving back to the community, and offers employees days off to volunteer
Cons – Very top-heavy and far too high of G&A for the production levels
Unmotivated employee base now (that 5 years ago was much more satisfied)
More concerned with appeasing the masses than in retaining and rewarding the top performers
Fairly uptight environment
Advice to Senior Management – Too top-heavy -- too many VPs for size of company

Current Employee – been working at Nexen as a contractor for more than a year
Pros – Great people to deal with, very selective in getting the best people into the organization and that makes you deal with the best people in the industry. No micro-management and management is supportive.
Cons – I couldn't find any so far!
