I worked at Nexen as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The company offered many interesting courses regarding the theory and applications in oil industry, as well as courses for self-improvement. The department I worked for also provided me with several different interesting projects to work on.

    Cons

Some of the downtime in between projects left time to yourself. But you must make the best of this time for independent study.

    Beware of Middle Management

Former Employee - Contract Administrator in Calgary, AB (Canada)

I worked at Nexen as a contractor

    Pros

free coffee, tea, snacks, lunches weekly, great retirement parties with open bars

    Cons

Middle management is not college educated however has far too much power over decision making. Contractors are treated like second class citizens and if you are a contractor you will more than likely hear "Oh but your a contractor so..." or "Thats not available for contractors" They are well known for micro managing time as well, closely following to the minute when you come in and leave for the day and at lunch. Feedback loop for peer review on work often delayed 2 weeks or more they then wonder why work was not completed to their satisfaction. The team lead on this team is not organized and is quite unstable you do not know who you will be getting on a day to day basis.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ease off and stop micro managing and have faith that you hired the right people to have the job completed. When you take memos and notes from open door conversations do not turn around to your lead team and present them as your own. Have a quicker turn around time on peer review and make it a priority. Learn how to take accountability for lack of leadership. Offer real opportunities for growth and development for senior members of the team.

I have been working at Nexen as an intern (more than an year)

    Pros

Very nice people, excellent co-workers, great pay, car pool is awesome

    Cons

HR department is so far disconnected from the needs of the company, its very easy for someone to "backstab" you so you always have to be on guard, not much opportunity for career growth

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a handle on your HR or you will lose all your good people

I have been working at Nexen as a contractor (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    - 2 fridays per month off
    - nice pension
    - great work/life balance
    - country club atmosphere, off-sites at expensive hotels

    Cons

    - no clear strategy, no long-term targets ever provided
    - heavy operational focus with little clue about the future
    - company is run by accountants who are obsessed with precision but do not understand the big picture
    - many people very busy working on things that do not add value, overstaffed
    - employee rank stack system is largely subjective, managers have no authority to properly rate their own people as other managers can overrule
    - zero autonomy, all decisions made at the top by arguably unqualified people
    - current power struggle between Calgary head office and UK division where the money is made
    - ongoing commitment to fund disaster mega-project which vacuums cash from the rest of the company. Poor capital allocation.
    - poor communication to staff following CNOOC takeover
    - Calgary management has not yet grasped that Nexen is now a subsidiary of another company. Current org structure makes no sense.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have a lot of talented people. Give some autonomy to staff and good things are likely to happen.

    I worked at Nexen

    Pros

There is a great deal of work to be done
    Genuinely nice people
Business units (other than IT) genuinely happy
Much more opportunity for meaningful work for IT employees

    Cons

    Fundamental misunderstanding of technology/architecture
    Heavy reliance on Gartner reports
Get it done at all costs mentality in many cases
Not meaningful or challenging work for senior contractors

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring in senior people from other environments to help craft a longer term view

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee in Houston, TX (US)

I worked at Nexen full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent pay, Nice building, generally well meaning company, but...

    Cons

The US version of this company is kind of on the ropes. Loosing a lot of staff, for a variety of pretty good reasons, and though they are no longer an immediate extension of the canadian way, it still ends up being the default management style.
I dont think it is unfair to say this companies future is definitely a question mark, a previous poster called it a "Bright Future" and I hope for the sake of those who remain that is true, but that was not the consensus opinion of the average individual when I was there.
I would strongly suggest you ask a lot of questions at the interview about staffing, future, scope.
The good news is that all of this bodes well for negotiating your pay. Trust me, they need you, just dont think you are going to retire here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Break out of the Canadian mold, you are carrying a fair amount of dead weight in low level managers who are out of their element.
    Best of luck

I have been working at Nexen full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good hiring package, good work to off time balance. Vacation time is very competitive, good pension options

    Cons

Compensation pay is barely competitive for work expected. People in management that are not qualified, do not by Nexens values at mid level. HR is out of touch with industry competitiveness to retain good employees, no accountability of work by management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Yes men are not your best employees for management.
