I have been working at Novell full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

    - Senior Executives "get it"
    - Going private has provided a longer term strategy rather than focussed on what the shareholders want this month
    - The new Novell allows for greater focus and specialisation
    - Product direction is receiving very positive feedback and reaction
    - Small enough to be more agile, Large enough to compete effectively

    Cons

    Analysts do not like Novell
Still hear, "doesn't Novell just do NetWare?"

    Pros

Awesome balance between life and work. I never felt like I was going to get fired when a family emergency came up and I had to work from home or remotely to tend to it.

    Cons

Lay-offs. Even after attachmate came into play there are still lay offs. This is the major reason I see people leave of their own free-will. In addition decisions made higher up give the company a poor outlook for the future.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More focus on providing and brighter outlook for the future. Stop doing lay-offs or "corporate restructurings" whatever you want to call them they destroy morale of your employees.

I have been working at Novell

    Pros

Very flexible schedule and easy to work with. Work-life balance is terrific, office culture is very inviting and fun - there to learn and get stuff done while having fun attitude. Talented co-workers and mentors to help.

    Cons

It's not the best to work for a company that is slowly dying. In my opinion, there are some great ideas that just haven't been executed quite right to gain spotlight (like Novell Filr). Great opportunity for personal growth and enhancing IT skills. Compensation is below average in my opinion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please offer raises to your employees to entice talent to stay.

I have been working at Novell full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

1.Decent salary(earlier it was much better, have heard from seniors in novell that few years back the hike was between 20% to 30% for all the employees which is very rare oin IT industry)
2.Lot to learn(Even the QA guys who already work o python get to learn java)
3.Management is not bad but needs improvement.

    Cons

1.In the last 2 years the annual hike is close to what a service based company gives.
2.There are hardly any new entries in the higher management & most of them are working here for last 15 years & so have a little tendency of forcing their opinion on you at times.
3.Company is not doing well & has been sold twice in last 5 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

1.Try to match the compensation with contemporaries.

I worked at Novell full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

It's very employee friendly. Policy and benefits are really good despite of lots of trims in recent past. Employee recognition is always a priority and it's literally celebrated. Work-life balance is pretty good. Best is medical leave policy which offers you leaves at actual. Work is well defined and execution is also proper. Learning support is also on cards all the time.

    Cons

Work from home not encouraged. Salaries are not up to the industry standard. Lots of oldies with feeling of ownership. Nothing much cutting edge in terms of work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring it to level in terms of salary and perks and provide opportunity to work in a variety of cutting edge technologies, lots of older employees will be back.

I have been working at Novell full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

There are some very good people in this company. However, very few of them are in a position to make a difference.

    Cons

Terrible upper management. 10 years ago this company had a very strong moral compass, worked ethically and treated the employee as a valued asset. Now, the benefits are lousy, the policies are anti-employee and the ONLY focus is how to bilk a customer out of a dollar. Policies are re-written on the fly to make a sale. Workload is heavy as the company is stretched super thin at every position. There are customer-centric jobs here that are being done by one person, where at our competitors might be done by a team of 15-20 people. And every single year, the company loses more and more net business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Honestly, treat your people like they are your most important asset instead of interchangeable parts that can be replaced at will. Stop trying to screw your employees over with horrible policies and benefits that are simply dreadful.

    Pros

    1. Salary offered at the time of Joining is good.
    2. Good technical people .
    3. Complex product to learn

    Cons

1.Company is not doing well so to cut cost they are hiring service company managers and these managers have brought worst culture in Novell . You may have to fight on hourly basis in office. These managers don't understand the product and will behave very bad with you.
2.In last 3 years not seen a single Hike in salary, only hike you will see will be at the time of Joining.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. What is the need to hire service company managers in a technical company .
    2. With price rise every where people need salary hike ,without salary hike how can someone survive in Bangalore?
    3. It is going just in Nokia direction ,promote research and development here.
