    Ogilvy Sydney - going through growing pains

    ProsThe people, as in many agencies, are great - pretty much across the board (with the odd jerk)

    ConsOpportunities seemed limited; some 'ol' timers' rusted on and never to forsake their positions of comfort

    Still feeling the stain of the change from Singleton Ogilvy and Mather - culturally and structurally

    Advice to Senior ManagementKeep going - keep pushing - but do much more to recognize its the people inside the business that drive success

    ProsIdeas and hard work are appreciated. A highly structured agency that has had to reinvent itself for modern media.

    ConsHours can be long, pollitics and behind-the-back scheming are part of the culture, always a new face with a new idea coming through and making sweeping changes. A wonderful place while you're a favored child, and when you fall from favor you probably won't know why.

    ProsThe people, the people, the people. Super creative, smart, talented, fun people.
    The commitment to health with the in-house nurse, gym and massage therapist were a nice touch and convenience.
    Training opportunities--in the years they were offering them these were a huge bonus and learning opportunity.

    ConsToo much work, not enough people. It's a culture where long hours and exhausted people are considered de rigeur and almost a matter of pride. Maintaining this type of environment is draining to the employees and the morale.
    Also the location is awful. There is no getting around it no matter how much management tries to sugarcoat it.

    Advice to Senior ManagementStop trying to win business by promising lower prices to clients that are unrealistic.
    Spend some time "in the trenches" so you can be more in touch with the majority of the organization.
    Promote work/life balance and mean it.
    And be honest--the whole move to the new building was handled with so much ridiculous spinning. Stop trying to spin the people who you pay to spin other people!
    Stop having Christmas parties if you can't hand out raises.
    Bring back training opportunities--these were extremely valuable and a unique bonus for Ogilvy.

    ProsReally fast paced environment with high expectations teaches you to perform to the best of your abilities under pressure. Excellent place to start a career, definitely teaches you valuable time management and performance skills that will help you at other jobs. great vacation policy

    Consas with lots of the big agencies, in the lower tier positions pay is low and promotions are few and far between. raises are small if you see one, and it's easy to get lost in the crowd

    ConsNo mentorship, no raises, no compensation for positive performance reviews, and conservative clients.

    Advice to Senior Managementit promotes loyalty when you give your employees raises/bonuses at the end of the year. There is a high turn over rate for lower level creatives because of this issue.

    ProsEveryone is really intelligent and nice. The hours are extremely laid-back and flexible. And the work is interesting and rewarding. let alone the company is doing very well.

    ConsThe pay is very mediocre here although most advertising agencies have similar salaries. However, if you stay and work hard you will move your way up and eventually make as much money as you are looking for.
