Busy

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Philadelphia Gas Works

ProsMany projects but oftentimes not much follow of management on the provided information. Many projects keep employees busy, the day flies by.

ConsOld-school business. Tasks take forever, employees drag their feet. Oftentimes stated that they want to do things better but for the most part, nothing is done.

– I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

ProsGreat Work life balance. Optional compressed work week. Great benefits -- Free health benefits, a lot of holidays. Pension plan with 5-year vesting.

Overall, best place I have ever worked.

ConsSlow career advancement. Potential sale looming. Union environment creates opposition to positive change.

Quasi government inefficiency privatize ASAP

Employee (Current Employee)
Philadelphia, PA (US)

I have been working at Philadelphia Gas Works full-time for more than 3 years

ProsSlow pace, low stress, Used to have plentiful parking (key words- used to)

ConsLow pay, very inefficient, overstaffed, essentially a workfare organization. there are some very bright people here but they are greatly outnumbered by the not so bright people. and there a lot of people here, way too many to the point that it diminishes productivity. No formal telecommuting program, no wifi, but who needs it when average employees don't receive mobile tech (laptops, tablets, smartphones). Parking is hard to come by and if you don't get a spot, you very much risk getting your car broken into. Location is terrible. Facilities are abysmal- dirty, cold/hot, roaches, etc. Much could be forgiven if there was no residency requirement, but alas, there is. Another wing of the 'Philadelphia machine' - stay away.

Advice to Senior Managementsell this place asap

A sad, disorganized company

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Philadelphia Gas Works

ProsIf you are an employee, PGW is probably a great place to work. It's a very relaxed atmosphere. You are required to live within the city limits, but health benefits are free. They hardly ever fire anyone, most people work there for many, many years... so do their brothers, parents, cousins, etc.

ConsManagement does not respect the contributions of contractors or employees, processes are written, but rarely followed.
The buildings are not clean, with leaking roofs and frequently broken HVAC systems.
The organization as a whole is resistant to change, in spite of statements to the contrary.
Contractors are treated like second class citizens.

Drop the residency restriction

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Philadelphia, PA (US)

I have been working at Philadelphia Gas Works

ProsPlenty of experienced (in the industry) people to learn from.
Offer and pay for almost any type of training if related to you employment.

ConsResidency (must live in the city of Philadelphia)
Low salary compared to others.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop restricting the quality of potential employess by requiring that they live inside the city.
