ProsBent over backwards to accommodate my chosen lifestyle, my family, and my personal issues. This company is, so far, the best I've ever worked at in my 17 yr career as a System Administrator.

ConsI had to come to San Antonio for training but honestly it's been pretty fun and so is probably not a con at all. They have told me that, as a remote worker, I will be limited in my upward career mobility but I have seen evidence within the organization to the contrary. Time will tell.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the good work!

ProsLove the Rackers. They're passionate, smart and fun!
The opportunities for Rackspace as a company are huge - market is open and abundant.
Career advancement to a leadership role is a political game as with most companies.
Technical career advancement at Rackspace is limited only by your own ability to learn!

ConsExecution issues on strategy create the biggest obstacles to success.
New incoming leaders/VPs fail to inspire their teams and lack the passion for the customer.
Not many women or diversity in leadership roles. No women or diversity in the executive leadership or on the board. Come on guys - don't be afraid of having diversity in your discussions.

Advice to Senior ManagementStay true to the vision of being the world's greatest service company. Technology + Fanatical Support for the win!

ProsGet to wear shorts at work. Rackspace seems to be doing well. Bonuses are good.

ConsUnrealistic deadlines from clueless management. Unworthy promotions. Tired of seeing the same mistakes again and again. Haven't seen much improvement in four years.

Advice to Senior ManagementPromote the good people and fire the bad.

Former Employee – worked at Rackspace full-time for more than 7 years

ProsExcellent benefits (besides Health, dental, vision etc)... A "get the job done" attitude; family orientated. Instead of building a new campus, they bought a MALL... and it has a slide... Rackers focus on customers and don't really care about anything else. It's all about the customer.

ConsIt is ALL about the customer. Internal IT is a hated place to work. All of the other Rackers can do your job better. If you don't make $$$ for Rackspace, your views and opinions on cost cutting and efficiencies are ignored.

Advice to Senior ManagementThere is working FOR Rackspace, and then there is working AT Rackspace. There shouldn't be a difference.

San Antonio, TX (US)

Current Employee – been working at Rackspace full-time for more than a year

ProsGreat compensation, fun atmosphere, supportive bosses and coworkers, somewhat flexible hours. Lots of freedom to innovate. Most importantly, the executive leaders have an extremely compelling vision for what they want the company to become in the future.

ConsThe company's organic growth has created a frenzied, chaotic environment which makes for inefficient processes. Internal tools are lacking.

Advice to Senior ManagementFirst of all, thank you for investing in the culture. It makes Rackspace an extraordinary place to work.

You can improve the company by looking for ways to enhance efficiency and communication between teams in different departments. Provide more support in the form of up-to-date, easy-to-use tools.

ProsThe company's commitment to culture is unfathomable without being in the company. Everyone eat lives and breaths the awesomeness that we give to each other. Yeah it's a little funky, but we're fundamentally a service company, and the best way to give service to our customers it to give service to each other.
There is a lot placed on the 'intangible' in Rackspace, but that's what makes it unique, and better.

The business has a good strategy, and it's very open to the employees. I sincerely trust upper management. That's _weird_.

ConsIf you don't fit the culture, you don't stay long. I've had good friends leave because it just wasn't the place for them, or they just didn't click perfectly. Politics happens, and there's fall out because of it, but at the same time the company as a whole moves forward.

ProsGreat culture and people. Hiring is tough and culture fit is the first thing we assess with potential candidates. We use the latest technologies and you get to work on very interesting problems. A single person can have a great impact. Our customer-focused fanatical support isn't just something we say -- it's real.

The rack also has a very good life/work balance and is very family focused. Having to leave early to pick your kids up from school from time to time is no problem. As long as work gets done, that is!

ConsThe customer is king and sometimes we need to drop everything to help a customer out. The rapidly evolving cloud ecosystem means we sometimes need to quickly change course, which can be frustrating, but it's just a fact of life in the technology biz.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep it going the way it is. Keeping the culture of the company intact as we quickly grow can be tough, but so far it's working.

ProsA real focus on taking care of employees. They work very hard to find the right fit for people, and aren't jerks about moving people around to keep them interested. Salaries are generally competitive, and the cost of living in San Antonio is low. They even have an internal radio stations, and employees can DJ their own shows!

ConsLots of reorganization can become challenging to deal with. You never know quite where your desk is going to be from one day to the next. Rapid growth meant lots of new management coming in, often with wildly differing management styles.
