I have been working at Rackspace full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Awesome work culture and very good learning environment. People are very friendly. I work on wide variety of cutting edge technologies. Helps me grow organically. The palces around here are beautiful and you can be in Appalachian Trials for camping or hiking with in hour and half from office. This is the city in Forest.

    Cons

The only downside being, there are not many good companies like Google etc and startup related places around here.

I worked at Rackspace as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Everyone is intelligent, enjoys the work! Pay is good. Still has not lost that start up feel. I was at the Austin office which is an good location.

    Cons

There are some inconsistencies in hiring. This is a fast moving company which may be a downside to some.

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

I have been working at Rackspace full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

If you don't like what you're working on today, chances are there is another role you can transfer into. As long-time Rackers depart, there are opportunities to step up and lead. Overall strategy and direction of company has never been clearer.

    Cons

Leaders have a hard time reigning in "false sense of culture". Rackspace culture is not about free food, discounts, ping-pong, and slacking off. Its about core values: fanatical support, results first, passion for our work, keeping our promises, and treating Rackers like friends and family.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I like where we're headed. We're a support company, not a technology company. Our strategy is clear.

I worked at Rackspace for more than 8 years

    Pros

The culture still tries hard to remain despite the struggles.

    Cons

Middle management is corrupted. Unless you are part of the cool kids, you will never advance no matter how qualified you are. Current middle management has no concern for the company, only their status and their priority is keeping their positions no matter the cost. Too many long timers leaving because of this - and it's not a healthy place to work anymore.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Executive leadership needs to open their eyes and listen to the employees who are fighting daily to keep the company together.

Former Employee - Product Marketing Manager in San Antonio, TX (US)

I worked at Rackspace full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

There are great career opportunities for career growth IF you're well-networked and you're willing to forego higher pay for interesting projects. Always an abundance of interesting projects.

    Cons

Bloated middle-management, constant changes in strategy. Low pay compared to industry averages. Lack of product vision and strategy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

"Leaders in Managed Cloud" is not a great strategy. You shouldn't need traditional managed services in cloud if you're using cloud properly.

Current Employee - Linux Systems Administrator I in San Antonio, TX (US)

I have been working at Rackspace full-time for less than a year

    Pros

There is ample room for personal growth as an Admin. Additionally, there are ample resources and some of the best Admins in the industry.

    Cons

Some of the culture seems to be shifting from what it once was. This appears (at least to those I work with, myself included) due to pressure to conform to the Corporate environment we function in daily.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't let the culture die and don't try to mask changes. One of the core values is TRANSPARENCY, let us not forget this.

I have been working at Rackspace full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    Awesome office
    Many great peers
    Some excellent managers
    Excellent Core Values
    Pretty laid back
    Food trucks!!!
    Lots of open source
    Flexible focus of work
    Business is improving slowly

    Cons

Upper management is often very political
    Core Values are rarely followed
The really, really bad Rackers are not fired when they should be
Tends to make managers out of people with no managerial experience at all
    Departments nickle and dime eachother
    Too many layers of management
Rackspace culture gets worse and worse as time goes on

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut out two layers of management
Consider Core Values in everything you do. They're plastered everywhere, yet you still ignore most of them!
Focus Rackspace on what we do best and strip out the rest
