    Pros

The team environment there is top notch. The relaxed work ambience is something a lot of company's are missing today. The company lives up to its Core values

I worked at Rackspace full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Fun events, relaxed atmosphere, casual dress, work from home etc. Some really nice people to work with.

    Cons

Recent management hires have killed the culture. No real focus or direction, changes strategy every quarter seemingly. Cliquiest place I have ever worked. No chance of promotion unless you are pals with the management. Insane levels of brown nosing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go back to how Rackspace used to be, when it was successful. There's a reason why the staff turnover is massive.

    Pros

    - Good peer atmosphere, easy to make friends
    - Some interesting technologies used, ahead of competition

    Cons

    - Very high amount of office politics, including the presence of cliques.
    - Significant brown-nosing. Promotion and advancement opportunities are limited/non-existent without it.
    - Lack of overall company strategy (changes every 3-6 months) and competitive advantage ensure that the company will fail in the future.
    - Management not open to constructive criticism and/or feedback.
    - Communication of key ideas and messages is absent or at best, delayed.

I have been working at Rackspace full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

They provide excellent training and opportunities for growth. Direct managers truly care about their employees and encourage family first.

    Cons

It is a high stress work environment and is a LOT of work. If you are lucky enough to land on a team that works cohesively with each other it is barely tolerable. The company is in dire need of good techs to handle the current load.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Micromanaging every aspect of Racker interaction with customers is slowly eating away at RS culture. The only way to truly keep Rackers happy under such stress loads is to let us be us. You have lost the moment Rackers start dreading going to work in the morning. Look for ways to award Rackers that consistently perform. The fanatical jacket is largely an unrealistic and unattainable goal.

I have been working at Rackspace full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Relaxed environment, friendly staff. Well-publicised culture promotes conscientious working. Lots of social events. Office facilities are very good. Varied and flexible benefits (healthcare, gym, free massages, childcare vouchers etc etc etc). Free food. An easy place to work. Will fit well around your lifestyle with a range of flexible working options. Not too much expected of you. A good, well known name to have on your CV which attracts interest from recruiters. Established progression path from DC Ops through 1st line support into the O/S specialist teams gives a great opportunity for cable guys to make the break into software support.

    Cons

Strong "networking culture" means that exposure to the high-value work is more to do with making friends with the right people than your qualifications and performance. If you have an introvert personality, you will struggle here. Once you are in one of the O/S specialist teams the only places to go are into management (forget it unless you make friends with the right people) or into the Solution Engineer/Architect team (who are VERY picky). Confusing corporate strategy - I am never quite sure what Rackspace wants to be - a hosting company? a support services company? A software company? It seems to change every few months. Pretence of being a direct competitor to Google, Azure and Amazon is exactly that.. Rackspace's assets are its large hardware investment and the quality of the staff it attracts. Internal database/ERP systems are a mess. For most tasks, you spend longer searching for and pulling information from the myriad of loosely connected systems than you do actually working with the Customer or the supported products. Automation breaks virtually every day requiring laborious manual workarounds.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Choose a company focus and stick to it.

Sort out the internal database systems. They are holding back productivity, affecting quality of the service delivered to Customers and causing the Company to require way more headcount than should really be necessary.

I have been working at Rackspace full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

If you don't like what you're working on today, chances are there is another role you can transfer into. As long-time Rackers depart, there are opportunities to step up and lead. Overall strategy and direction of company has never been clearer.

    Cons

Leaders have a hard time reigning in "false sense of culture". Rackspace culture is not about free food, discounts, ping-pong, and slacking off. Its about core values: fanatical support, results first, passion for our work, keeping our promises, and treating Rackers like friends and family.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I like where we're headed. We're a support company, not a technology company. Our strategy is clear.
