I have been working at Safeway full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Historically, Safeway has had a stable environment in which one can work for a long time in the private label group as a brand manager (unlike in a CPG firm where you either are promoted or worked out over time). It also is an environment in which you can see a lot, as there is not the same scrutiny from many layers of management as at a CPG firm. Also, while Safeway is conservative, you can be sure it is not going to do anything unsavory. That I did appreciate.

    Cons

It is a pretty conservative environment and not the most exciting. Many people in the grocery industry stay in it for their entire careers, so the setting is not always that dynamic or forward thinking.

Note that at the time of this writing Safeway has been slated to be acquired by the same company that owns Albertsons. This will be finalized at the beginning of the year 1/1/15. Time will tell if this is good or bad, but in the short run it is probably not good, as much will be in a state of chaos.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow employees to be more flexible and innovative. The grocery industry is under extreme pressure and needs to innovate or it will die.

I have been working at Safeway full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Talented hardworking people. Good benefits. Recently (this year) men no longer are required to wear ties and employees are now allowed to wear jeans on Friday. This is something the former CEO would never have allowed. Awesome company fitness center.

    Cons

Very long hours. Constant threat of being laid off if you cannot perform is exremely stressful. Very talented people are choosing to leave in light of the pending merger. Future employment status very fragile and uncertain.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management out of touch with reality of what employeess are dealing with.

    Current Employee - Courtesy Clerk/Stocker

I have been working at Safeway part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Courtesy Clerks get a lot of hours if they work hard. Has a diverse team that you will work with which in many cases is pretty fun. Some people become lifers at the company. This is a good job to acquire work ethics and experience.

    Cons

Not a very good Work Life Balance. Hours switch every week and can cause problems scheduling outside of work. Really, this business doesn't treat their employees very well and puts major stress on a store's team as well as the senior management. Pay is horrible and now it takes many years to become a journeyman. Not a lot of benefits.

I worked at Safeway full-time for less than a year

    Pros

If you need flexible hours, they can be fairly accommodating. Having the Union is a big plus.

    Cons

I did not like being shuffled around several departments all the time. I worked in the Bakery and Deli departments, as a Cashier and a Courtesy Clerk. I never knew where I was going to go and when.
