I have been working at Safeway part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Friendly co-workers and customers, employee discount, lots of flexibility given in dealing with customers.

    Cons

Inconsistent hours and shifts, abysmal pay scale, not very rewarding, not letting people out for needed breaks, shifts are either super short or way too long, registers are out-dated and frustrating for workers and customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More communication between managers in different departments, and at least try and make some effort to keep a stable schedule for individual employees. Back to back late night followed by early morning shifts are killer. Always ALWAYS have someone on the floor with a manager override card for when the registers inevitably mess up.

I have been working at Safeway full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Pay scale is average. Benefits are average. Advancement opportunities for those willing to deal with corporate life. Good parking. High paced.

    Cons

Directionless. Too high a reliance on temporary labor. Poor training. Poor internal communication. Inefficient spending. Erratic work schedules. High turnover rate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote stability. Retain full time employees. Learn how to successfully train new associates. Cut back on short sighted ventures as related to wasteful spending. Encourage communications between back stage facilities within business group. Become stewards of our company, not short term fire fighters.

I worked at Safeway full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

A great job when starting out. Pretty forgiving and you quickly learn about the business at a fast pace. Good for starters, as well as those looking for promotions, making for a great paying full time job during college and what not. Its a fairly stable job and has good consistency. If standing up all day is not a problem for you. Then Safeway is a good job for anyone really.

    Cons

Management is ok when it comes to making sure the employees have a crystal clear understanding of there jobs and where things are located. Also not always good at showing and telling you exactly how they want things done. Its best to ask the questions rather than just going for it by what the manger has told you. Best to make sure you listen and ask questions about the job that may not of been answered. Then you are set.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They should give more in depth descriptions of the employees tasks when they are talking with employees new or not. They should also show new coming employees around the store and show exactly how things should be done, until the employees and/or workers understand it very well. Shouldn't take long. No more than a couple hours depending on the job's task. Other than that, Safeway runs fluid and is often a hard job to fail at.

Not sure how things will shake out.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Offer the good employee an opportunity to stay in the site they like. This venture will change the culture that was just starting to be very positive.

I worked at Safeway full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Safeway is a good company. Its benefits are okay (they don't match 401k), health insurance is average and work-life balance is terrible. Your required to be available nights, weekends and holidays.

    Cons

Inadequte managers, needs better work life balance, need to spend more time listening to the employees and those with knowledge of the customers wants and needs. A lot of micro managing from managers who are being micro managed from their bosses. If a manager knows what they're doing then leave them alone.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do a better job listening and responding to employees and customers. The culture of needing profit for shareholders above any other interests starts to wear on you fast.

I have been working at Safeway full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The pay is pretty decent and the people that work here are generally pretty cool. If you have full time you can be set up nice.

    Cons

Constant transfers really screw up the department. Never a steady schedule. They can make you work an hour away from home. Its more of a "who you know" rather than what you know company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A lot of you are on your way out with the merger.

I have been working at Safeway full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The health insurance is nice and you can get full time quickly in many areas

    Cons

Bad management that micro manages everything and makes everyday processes
more challenging. Wages are locked into a over time step process that can leave part timers
    at minimum wage for years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take a step back and let your employe's do their jobs without being managed every step of the way.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have more checkers scheduled during your productivity peak times, lines get very long and it makes customer's very angry.

    Pros

Great people meant great friends work environment is not so stressful people tend to help if you have questions love the gym love the benefits and the pay is a little low

    Cons

The cons it's a man's world upper management needs to learn a couple things of leadership favoritism seems to be the key it's not what you know it's more who you know people that are hard workers seem not to get noticed as much
