Hard to plan your day accordingly - labor is very tight

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I worked at Safeway full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great co workers, nice benifits. That's it the rest sucked.

    Cons

Management accomplish goals through threats. As a head clerk I was was informed to actively write employes schedules so they would not get heath benifits.

I have been working at Safeway full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    Flexible scheduling, incredible job security.

    Cons

Bad morale, few incentives for advancement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create real incentives for advancement. Having a large number of assistant store managers making less money on an hourly basis than food clerks is a bad idea. One should also be able to reach journeyman level in less time.

I worked at Safeway full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Benefits! Paid holiday, vacation! And since you can only get hired for part time. It is the only company I know of that gives you full benefits on only 24 hrs a week.

    Cons

Poor communication between management. If you become a dept. Manager you will work 60 hours but only get paid for 40. Too much work and not enuf ppl. You give them 150% and they want more. It will never be enuff. Thr more you give the more they expect.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communication is vidal for success. Talk to your assistants even tho they are all 10 i mean in there 20s. Be a mentor guide them through instead of just throwing them out there. They hav no ppl skills. That is a trait that is not inherited it is taught! So teach them!

I have been working at Safeway full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

the moneys OK, The insurance is good, the fellow employees are GREAT

    Cons

No sick time, 2 paid holidays a year, want you to schedule your life around their needs! Upper level management has NO CLUE what it's like at store level!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit letting the buyers and warehouse send you unneeded product! Let the employees do their job.

I have been working at Safeway part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Friendly people, have never had issues with customers. Pretty stable environment, even though we're perpetually understaffed. The management takes safety very seriously.

    Cons

People don't use safety equipment properly, are lazy and have the mentality that "someone will do it later". Everyone talks poorly about everyone else. Always understaffed. Twice people have told me "never ask for days off".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You should probably work on not belittling your employees and understand that mistakes happen but pointing fingers isn't the way to get any sort of loyalty. Yelling at someone for something they didn't do when they weren't even on the clock is probably a waste of time.
