    Pros

Fun environment. people love programming, love what they do and are fun to work with. Very little room for ego. Just be good at your job, technically, and everyone will see it.

    Cons

Salaries are not competitive with google / facebook + samsung is not a sexy brand name in soft dev, so it's hard to get really good people to work here. The talent in the NYC innovation lab, is still here from the boxee days

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Either find a way to make this place feel way more like a startup or find a way to get the good parts of being a corporate, like lots of paid training, pay for your employees graduate / post graduate degrees, etc. Either try to compete with startups or try to compete with Google. It will make it easier to recruit and keep good people

I have been working at Samsung Research America full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

There are 4 groups here at SRA that are actually very different, if you want to compare them from the rest of the herd. These 4 labs are highly creative, innovative, and have released very relevant top rated products. Cool thing about these departments, is that they shell you from the usual politics that plague the rest. They encourage creativity, good design, and thinking outside the box mentality. These groups function like a start-up, They are quick and agile to the changes. Being in this ecosystem really helped me to mature, grow, and learn from others.

It is also a great place to learn about the mobile industry, it's developers engineering, and business.

Lots of perks. Free devices (gifts), free lunch (depends on the department), 401k, great health benefits, fun environment, great salary, great bonus, etc...

    Cons

    - You work a lot (but you get rewarded for it)
    - Headquarter is in Korea and they still control everything. You need HQ's approval to release anything.
    - Things change very quickly.
    - Little or no process at all.
    - Communication?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Can't really blame management. They have their own bosses who treats them harshly then your lowly senior designer. Our team is just lucky that we have good managers and great people. It is what it is.

    Pros

The quality of your experience here is highly dependent on which team you belong to and who your direct manager is, how capable he is, and whether his agenda is in line with your best interest or not. This can affect every aspect of your day-to-day experience, including how flexible your hours are and how many meetings you must attend, and how much time left you have to do the actual work. This is actually true of most places. Except here the vetting process of project managers seems pretty random, with some favoritism thrown in, therefore the quality of the managers varies by a wide range compared to other corporations.

    Cons

Working with S. Korea HQ is a nightmare due to language and cultural barrier. They will micromanage you.
If your manager is from Korea, don't take the job. Your life will be filled with stress.

IT infrastructure is subpar, but they are trying hard to improve it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management is not going to listen, so advice here is useless.

    Pros

I have been here for a short while. The refocus initiative has been great and there is a sense of enthusiasm and high energy.

The team I am in really looks out for each and gives great flexibility innovate while setting achievable and realistic business goals.

    If I had to summarize

Energy, refocussed efforts on specific goals, compensation, ability to get software onto millions of devices, new wave of innovation, hiring top tier talent, flexibility to innovate

    Cons

    some internal tools, portals, processes

I have been working at Samsung Research America full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good benefits (Healthcare, 401K). Extremely intelligent and educated workforce.

    Cons

Constant change. Everything is run from Korea (HQ). Local efforts are often over looked. Extreme internal politics, constant high level reorganization. Lots of employee churn after the Samsung mystique wears off and talented staff run out of patience and find they can work anywhere else they like. No employee ownership/stock plan. One way communication with HQ, information shared in a need to know only fashion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fight for autonomy and embrace the silicon valley work environment.
