I worked at Shoppers Drug Mart full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - seeing new products before they hit the shelves

    - opportunity for promotion

    - my direct superior valued my opinions and ideas

    - majority of beauty associates (young and mature) were absolutely lovely to work alongside

    - best loyalty program available by far (Sephora step up your loyalty prog game!!!)

    Cons

    - Head Office pushed for loyalty prog "opt-ins" (only applies to Beauty Boutiques) so much so, that they were being attained in dishonest ways

    - Head Office also rewarded said dishonest sales associates for their "high numbers" of opt-ins

    - miserable, bitter, insecure, dishonest associates poisoned the healthy, fun-loving work environment

    - a lot of illiterates work in retail (especially the beauty industry)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - seldom do I find friendly and enthusiastic mgmt in beauty industry retail; my direct superior was truly under-appreciated by her own superiors

    - front shop mgmt, although i did not always have to report to them, were petty and catty; regularly picking on the same "weak" individuals

I have been working at Shoppers Drug Mart part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Good part time jobs available for students, full-time jobs such as pharmacists or management currently make good living salaries for Canadians, coworkers/staff are generally very polite and friendly and follow regulations, 30% discount on everything bought at shoppers.

    Cons

Barely any opportunity to advance in career, stuck where you are with your current salary unless you are planning on working as a manager or owner at some point. Without a degree there isn't really a chance of going anywhere big in this career path

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

District management of Ottawa seems to be hiring owners who are younger/more gullible/easy to control and will work for less money and do what they're told. Not a very good way of doing things, but more money to the big guy is better for the big guy, which is probably their reasoning. Wouldn't want my end goal to be a shoppers drug mart manager or owner considering the current way things are done around there.

    Pros

The people. Scheduled breaks. Opportunity to do different roles (cash, cosmetics, merchandising).

    Cons

Dealing with challenging people. Many policies to follow.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow good workers to move up to supervisor or pharmacy technician if interested.

Current Employee - Staff Pharmacist in Niagara, ON (Canada)

I have been working at Shoppers Drug Mart part-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

stable company, great locations, always willing to innovate

    Cons

constant need for short-sighted expense cutting and productivity improvement; should encourage more individuality in stores rather than 100% " cookie-cutter " approach; if it " ain't broke... don't try to fix it " i.e if results are above par take a more measured approach to operational issues. Continue operational controls with things like security.... but empower staff to give good service and improved sales.... e.g. why do registers sign off in 60 seconds; sometimes slow to update technology and implementation is done without enough feedback..... e.g. new hand held scanners are inferior

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

treat experienced employees as assets rather than commodities; invest as much in people as you do in leaseholds and fixed assets; train mid-level VP's and DM's to be more people oriented and less like " numbers " people

A good place to advance your career (Depending on if you say/do the right things)

I worked at Shoppers Drug Mart full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    - Good career advancement. Typically if you're a great employee and know your stuff, it is completely possible to make your way up fairly easy
    - Free certifications and learning tools made available through SDM University. This is an employee only website where you can learn new skills and gain certifications for everything from basic management and business skills, to advanced excel and data analyzing training programs
    - Employee discount (even in boutique stores with high-end cosmetics)
    - A lot of follow-up at store level from district managers, to make sure everything is in working order
    - The KEY is having good staff and good management. If you have either of these, your work experience is a MILLION times better.

    Cons

    - Anyone below a Front store manager generally has a pretty low wage
    - The available budget for hours is ridiculously low. Management has to work double time to pick up the slack where an extra employee or shift is sometimes necessary. A lot of stores are very understaffed, which leads to customers getting very upset. Head office knows about the issue but will not change it. They insist it is your fault for not being able to budget or allocate hours properly (How can that be true if EVERY store has the same issue?).
    - It is common practice for management to put in WAY over the 40 hour work week
    - The relationship between head office (corporate) and store level can be pretty bad at times. Store level employees have the general feeling that head office personnel think themselves as over and above anyone at store level. Store level staff get 'scared' when head office comes to visit (which I do not think is healthy in a business environment).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Treat your employees with dignity and respect
    - I understand the budgeted hours are low, but lets follow labour laws here and pay people for the ACTUAL hours they are working. You are adding to the problem by making it seem that you are able to make the budget, when in reality you can't. Forced overtime/underpaid employees = unhappy employee = problems for everyone.

I worked at Shoppers Drug Mart

    Pros

Nice people to work with, depending on the store location. Potential for cashiers to be promoted to supervisors etc.

    Cons

Long hours, bad pay, good employees eventually end up leaving for school or to a better job
