    Southern Company Review

Business (Former Employee) Birmingham, AL (US)

ProsGood hours and flexible with empolyees

ConsEOO says it all about this company.. Promoting minorities' over more qualified people was a common theme amongst the company. In fact they prided themselves with this accomplishment. If you are a minority this is the place for you..

    Advice to Senior ManagementNone

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

A Decent company with highs and lows

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

    ProsGreat place to work
    low stress
    Onsite gym and nursing station

ConsEngineers don't test new hardware; expect sys admins to test
Lack of training every year - we always have money for training then strangely it disappears
Politics - people are rewarded for staying at the company; not actually knowing what their job entails
I've heard this company was in a youth movement for the past 10 years - still haven't seen it.
Treat the contractors, the ones who actually work harder than the employees, like sub-humans.
Will contract an employee for 10+ years with no desire to bring them in full-time.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease change the mentality in the departments; Support staff not appreciated. Contractors are not appreciated within their own groups and work ten times harder than employees who has been there over 35+years and just "riding the wave"

Great place to work, but not perfect

Communication (Current Employee) Atlanta, GA (US)

ProsStable company with good benefits and fair pay. Great people, many of whom spend their entire careers there. Access to great resources, education, organizations, etc.

ConsSlow moving. Corporate politics can stifle progress and creativity. Many have become complacent, lack motivation.

Advice to Senior ManagementTo encourage a culture of innovation, leadership must discourage the corporate hierarchy. Executive garages and office/cube location based purely on on job grade reflect an old school way of thinking. Learn from the work environment at today's leading companies.

Unmatched company culture. Southern hospitality is really exemplified in this place.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsNice people for the size of the company
    Supportive management
Challenging environment giving you chances to think outside the box

ConsLimited room for advancement - folks with 20+ years kinda rule the place.....
A little challenging to get in at the mid - senior level - they hire from within - which is a good thing if you are already with them

Solid Internship - Good for applying IT skills

IT Intern (Former Employee) Baxley, GA (US)

ProsStrong Intern development program and fun intern day (R3 Day) to help interns network and see the company culture. It seems as though the company will support you if you want to get additional training for another role. I saw several full-time IT employees also became certified engineers through Southern Company, allowing them to be more effective and generate more value for the corporation (and earning them a pay raise).

ConsBaxley Georgia has nothing in it, besides Plant Hatch. Strong emphasis is placed on focusing on MIS/IT in college career.

Advice to Senior ManagementSome of the "corporate culture" and "strategic mission" type branding comes off as trite when you are sitting in a nuclear power plant.

Hard work rewarded, but promotions given to women/minorities

Systems Analyst (Current Employee) Atlanta, GA (US)

ProsGreat benefits, pension still included, and management is generally very supportive. Pay is targeted to be middle of the market.

ConsFor better or worse, young white males tend to not be promoted since the company is focused on getting females and minorities promoted into the management pool. Most of the time competent people are found to fill the positions, but occasionally there will be a marginal promotion due to affirmative action.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe more transparent about the goals of the company in promoting people. Encouraging young white males to stay when there isn't a serious plan to promote them is only going to lead to a bunch of disgruntled individual contributors in a few years.

Prosemployment opporunity is stable and secure

Consa "southern" company in every sense of the term
    industry is not "glamorous"
    industry pay is low

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement is created through networks, not education/experience.
