I have been working at Southern States full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The flexibility of being a sales rep is wonderful, benefits of having a car, phone, and other electronics are a huge plus. Most accounts are great to work with, developing both work relationships and personal friendships.

    Cons

Many lonely hours driving on the road, inconsistent sales goals, and feeling of "always working". The company is not very progressive or quickly receptive to those working in the field.

I worked at Southern States full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Company attracts quality individuals at the store level.

    Cons

Lack of consistent direction and leadership from corporate management. Company lacks focus and is increasingly relying on underperforming management imported from outside the company for direction. Company culture is in constant flux and no longer reflects the noble values of the mission statement. Southern States can still rely on it's employees but they can no longer rely on Southern States. Very likely the company will soon begin shrinking back to it's wholesale/milling core even as it amateurishly pursues retail expansion and continues driving away talent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Refocus company on the values that made Southern States successful - create a consistent company culture. Reform hiring practices as imported management has damaged company culture almost beyond repair.

I worked at Southern States as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

The people were down to earth and very welcoming.

    Cons

I had nothing to do and got paid $13/hour as an accounting intern. The program was new and there was not much structure.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To keep interns, please give them work to do.

I have been working at Southern States full-time

    Pros

Company will promote if you work hard.

    Cons

The culture is tough. HR won't deal with employees that don't pull their weight. As a result, the work falls on good people. Work long hours with poor life/work balance. The company has been shrinking for years. Good time off program if there are enough people to cover you while you're out (thinly staffed).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get out and talk to the employees to better understand what is going on. Realize the world and employees' expectations have changed. People want to feel valued, not just employed. Be more than a paycheck and benefits.

I worked at Southern States full-time

    Pros

There's a lot of down time to hang out with your coworkers and watch the clock.

    Cons

This company essentially operates the same way it did when it was established in the 1920's. Most employees have worked at the company for over 20 years and have no motivation to see the company grow and prosper. A majority of the employees pretty much grew up on farms don't know to use a computer/read/write, etc.

I worked at Southern States full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Hard work for great hard working people. You get what you put into it. You get to help people on a daily.

    Cons

Not the greatest pay. Heck, it's retail. Also, very outdated POS system. Please update computer system soon.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

At the store I was at.......... focus and develop good employees and "trim the fat" i.e. people with bad attitudes and work ethics should not be given any tolerance.

I worked at Southern States full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

None. There is nothing good about this place.

    Cons

No consideration for work/life balance in buying group--expected to work early, late and weekends with no mention of comp time to salaried employees, but if you take 2 hours to go to the doctor, you must use PTO to get paid. Below average salaries, no bonus opportunities, mediocre benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You've cleaned house in the Farm & Home management, but you need to clean some more.

    Pros

It was a great experience with great management and the environment was a very friendly environment. The store manager was a great manager who cared about every employee

    Cons

There are few cons to working for this company. One of which is just customers in general, they would get very frustrated sometimes but that is to be expected.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep of the good work and continue to value your employees.
